UFA Derek Grant says he liked Calgary, is open to re-signing but wants to play in NHL. Adds he's "no dummy", knows #Flames depth at centre.

Not sure if the Grant stuff was posted. Sounds to me like we'll struggle to keep him here unless we can give him a decent shot at playing in the NHL. But with Monahan, Bennett, Backlund and Stajan coming back next season, I don't see a place for Grant. Well, I do, as 4th line centre. But can we move Stajan out, what with the possible expansion draft, the dwindling number of veteran forwards on the team, his bad contract etc?

Be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Stajan could also make the move over the to the wing - it would just need to be stressed to Grant that the 4th line C spot is his to lose, and that Stajan is being transitioned out of that role to 3/4 line LW

It's weird that there are No-Trade Clauses, No-Movement Clauses, but no such thing as a No-Waive Clause. You would think a No-Waive Clause would be a great incentive to retain a guy like Grant.

Let's split the difference shall we?

Both can sign 8 year $6.750 million per year deals.

Then it can be the Gio/Johnny/Mony Flames cap max.
I like this.

Surprised Hamilton not going to the worlds. I guess he has his reasons but I would have liked to watch him play there, more so than Gio and Brodie.

Not going to give BT too much credit for making the quick decision on Hiller. I can't imagine an easier decision.

My spider sense tells me we see two new goalies next year.

They could probably work something like in if they wanted. AFAIK, the terms of NTCs and NMCs are pretty negotiable.

Ideally I'd like to move Stajan to the wing and make Grant the 4th lone centre. Then you can still expose Stajan in the expansion draft.

If you move Stajan to the wing you end up having to sit Bouma or not give a kid like Shinkaruk a chance or you relegate Stajan to the press box where his position is irrelevant. Unless they have to sit according to position up there.

Stajan had a fun, unexpected game on the wing. I don't see that as his new home. Not on the Flames at least.

I'd like to see Grant back as the 4th line center too, and I'm good with moving Stajan to the wing to make it happen, but you can't go giving a 26 year old with 40 NHL games some sort of "no-waive" clause.

You'd basically be gifting him an NHL roster spot that he should have to earn.

One thing you could do though is give him a one way contract that way he makes the same money in the AHL as he would in the NHL.

In fact, he'd make more in the AHL because he wouldn't have to pay escrow IIRC.

Does anyone know if Treliving will be holding a press conference today?

Bouma is always hurt, so atleast there is that.

This could very well be the case.

I think at the very least, Treliving wants to explore his options before he re-signs Ortio. Pretty obvious that the organization wants to have Gillies in the AHL and getting the bulk of the starts. If the Flames find 2 upgrades over Ortio - with at least one of them being a younger goalie (around Ortio's age anyways), I bet they go that direction.

I like that he is taking his time where Ortio is concerned. Wouldn't be surprised to see 2 new ones, wouldn't surprise me to see Ortio being retained.

because that is because a NMC means cannot be waived

a (full) NMC also means cannot be traded but there are still NTCs.

Highly doubtful considering he passed through waivers a few months ago.

I'd be surprised. If the team with the worst goaltending in the league won't sign him I doubt others would trade assets for him when they could sign for free in the off season.

I'm guessing Sean Monahan wishes he could sign the same deal as Gaudreau...

I'm not against a Perry/Getzlaf or Kane/Toews situation but only if they meet in the middle of what can reasonably expected to be a disparity in pay.
