And the Canucks are a legitimately worse team than Edmonton or Toronto. Overachievement in the first third of the season is the only thing that prevented them from Buffaloing this season. And this is for a team that wasn't trying to tank.
|
Well to be fair, I don't think Edmonton has been trying to tank the past 10 years either

^^^If the Flames had the Canucks goalie tandem, this game against MInny would probably be a battle for a playoff spot.

It was mentioned on the post game show last night that over the last 49 games the Flames PP has been scoring at 21.2%. It was around 10% for the first 32 games. Hopefully that means the PP is at least figured out for next season.

I get what you're saying, but nothing is figured our for next season at this point

The Flames are among the top-ten teams in the league for the lowest number of shots allowed per game. I get that with the style the Flames play there are a lot of dangerous defensive breakdowns, but the goalies have really fumbled this season. I think the balance of guilt is even higher than 2/3.

Goaltending.
PK.
Team defense.
PP.
If the goalies and special teams get sorted out this summer there's no way this team shouldn't at least challenge for a wild card spot next season.

I agree with your top three, but don't think the Flames PP is a great concern moving forward. In the space of several weeks they have moved from dead last in the league to #21. They have the personnel to make the power play work, and I expect it will be much, MUCH better over the entire season next year.

Its pretty obvious the power play immediately became better when Hamilton replaced Wideman on the top pairing. Sometimes the fix is as easy as having a struggling player removed from the picture.

I think both Hamilton and Nakladal are more effective on the powerplay than Wideman. However I think an equally important reason why the powerplay has improved over early in the season is that we have improved net front presence. Ferland and especially Colborne have been doing a better job of screening the goalie. We have fantastic powerplay point men but a point shot is usually nothing without some screens or a deflection.
Flames are only really lacking a sniper to have a really potent powerplay. There's a few snipers this draft, a couple powerforwards who could provide more net front presence and a purely skilled forward with finish and vision. Any of the forwards at the top end of this draft would help our powerplay long term.

I'll be really disappointed if we don't retain Nakladal.
Pleasant surprise of the season.

So basically Goaltending and Coaching
Wideman coming back in any regular role will make the defence problem a lot worse.

Speaking of Wideman, did every see Jooris get rocked by one of the linesmen? I hope he is suspended.

Me too, bought 3 pucks from the Wives/GF's charity table thing on tuesday and somehow managed to get 2 Nakladals to go with a Ramo signed puck.

@WesGilbertson
#Flames F Derek Grant (groin) is out tomorrow. D Jakub Nakladal and D Deryk Engelland are questionable. Expect to see some new faces.
Call up Arnold, Kulak/Wotherspoon, Kylington?

KYLINGTON! Oh man that'd be so very sweet to give him a taste of the NHL on the last game of the year. Please please let it be him.

I dunno about Kylington. He's coming off a concussion that kept him out for what, around a month? I think they'd be hesitant to bring him up, don't think he's NHL ready.
I think Kulak, Wotherspoon or even Culkin would be more realistic.
