I'm not worried about our 1st rounder. The top 12-14 are heads above the rest, so we are going to get a quality pick with our pick. I'm looking at the Dallas 1st/2nd, as well as Florida and our 2nd.

We need to strike some depth gold with our mid round picks. Do we chance a pick on Carter Hart if he drops to our 2nd? If we get Dallas' 1st, do we take him then? He is an outstanding junior goalie, but isn't big by any stretch of the imagination. If he fell to our 2nd I'd take a stab at him, but otherwise I'd like to grab Griffen Outhouse with a 6th or 7th.

Carter Hart 6'1 170lbs
63gp 2.14 GAA 0.918s%
Griffen Outhouse 5'11 175lbs
27gp 1.82 GAA 0.938s%

They are the top 2 tenders in the WHL this season.

I'd also like to walk away with some size and skill in our forward group.

Tage Thompson out of UConn has 14g 32pts in 36gp. 6'5 and 185lbs with room to bloom

Brett Murray out of the CCHL has 14g 46pts in 48gp. 6'4.5 and 196lbs. Still room to fill out.

Logan Brown of the Windsor Spitfires has 21g and 74pts in 59gp. At 6'6 and 218lbs with room for growth, he could be a very intimidating player.

Tim Gettinger out of Sault Ste. Marie has 17g and 39pts in 60gp. At 6'5.5 and 203lbs he could be a physical force as well.

I understand that Brown could very well be gone by Dallas' 1st rounder, as that combination of size and skill is highly sought after. One or two of these guys will be available to us throughout the 2nd or 3rd round, and I don't think it would hurt to pick one up. Especially Tage Thompson.

Sorry, I got him mixed up with his brother.
Kailer Yamamoto is top-end prospect who is 2017 eligible. Kailer only has 5 points in 6 playoff games, but had 71 points in 56 games during the regular season.

Speaking of relatives, the Tkachuk brothers (Matthew and Brady) are cousins with the Hayes brothers (Jimmy and Kevin). They're also cousins with the Fitzgeralds, for a grand total of 7 family members that have or will play in the NHL.

I get the feeling he's going to be a sure NHL player, maybe a star.
People always bring up how Nylander is not soft-and its true, in JR. That doesn't mean he won't be soft in the NHL. At best he will be neutral, kind of like Hudler. For a team that desperately wants to add size and physicality to the top 6 I just can't help to think we look elsewhere.

Good prospect though, I'm starting to think he'll be a 30 goal guy for sure.

Nope it does. These are mutually exclusive "or's" so you can add them. We have a ~9% chance of 1st and only first, a ~9% chance of 2nd and only 2nd, and a ~9% chance of 3rd and only 3rd. So we have a ~27% chance of either 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Well, if it shows 0% it means a non-zero number that rounds to 0%. Only a blank cell means truly zero probability. So Poe's still got that to hold on to (I kid, Poe. I kid )

I'm sure Alexander Nylander will play in the NHL and be a good player. But is another Kristian Huselius really what this team needs?

Brown us huge but has no edge to his game, Tage Thompson is putting up great numbers but for some reason the scouts don't like him much it seams.

From what I've read, Tage plays a physical game without catching the eyes of refs. I think the fact that he missed games due to injury in almost every season he has played has knocked him down the rounds.

Watched a bit of tonight's Finn game. Neither scored but Laine is a handful on the boards with great reach and decent butt size.

Puljujärvi less coherent. Slight sense that his brain doesn't keep up with his feet. I really can't put him in the same group as Laine.

How would you rank each of these on the RBI?
It could come down to that, when a team is deciding which guy to take at #2.

RBI?

Anyway I'm betting no team would prefer Puljujärvi over Laine. I don't know how they compare against the other top prospects since I don't see them, but my feeling is that Matthews first and Laine second are set and then you start the discussion about the rest.

Can anyone sell me on Matthew Tkachuk? I feel like he is consistently in the top 6, no one is raving about him. Just based on others comment I'm excited about all the other top 8 potential picks, but I feel like I know little about him.

From this thread, here is Tkachuk's scouting report:

I have to agree with the Laine > Puljujarvi rank Henry. I actually think Laine could be a franchise winger, while Puljujarvi will 'merely' end up being a rather elite one that is perhaps a better 200ft player. Would this be an accurate summation by your views?

I mean, I would totally love either one. I also think Puljujarvi has such an underrated shot - especially his one-timer. Not at Laine's level, but very good nonetheless.

The most lavish praise I have heard being thrown on Laine is comparisons to the magnificent one. Definitely a huge step from that level, but I kind of see it what people are referring to. His size, reach, ability to control the puck and protect it. He is almost like a cross between Mario and Lindros, but just not at the level of either one (I don't think he is generational - just seems to have a bit of both styles).

I really like Dubois because he seems to almost be a sort of hybrid between Laine and Puljujarvi. The aggression of Laine (ok, more aggressive than Laine), with Puljujarvi's skating and non-stop motor. Actually, if I had to pick one prospect in this draft that I would compare to Sam Bennett - it would be Dubois. Just a larger version of Bennett is what I often see.

Again, none of the above is a perfect comparison - but just what I find myself reminded of the more I view these prospects.

Puljujärvi does have a really good slapshot when he has the opportunity to wind it up, but goalscoring is also about quantity and he doesn't seem able to get as many quality shots in as Laine.

Don't know how to project Puljujärvi. I almost just accept the scouting consensus here.

Laine is actually pretty aggressive in a way. Much more so than Puljujärvi as far as I've seen. He consistently leans on defenders, he maintains control of the puck while being humped by defensemen. Doesn't sit back too much, doesn't hesitate in going to the net through a defender. He doesn't hit consistently but when does, he hits hard. Not a half-assed drive-by hit, he hits with purpose.

He'll be heavy and draining for any defenders to deal with from shift to shift. You see him stick handle through open ice but he might end up being even stronger in board play. His skating coach has done a great job with his overall speed but quickness in bursts is the one aspect where you can't project him very high.

If the Jets can't get a Finn or Matthews, there's something full circle about Tkachuk coming to Winnipeg I really dig.
