Comparing the situations in Calgary, BC, TO and Montreal isn't accurate. BCs attendance hasn't changed much. Skydome and Olympic stadium weren't desirable places to watch games.
A fancy new stadium with glass roof etc may be popular.

Actually the Lions attendance was pretty poor when they playout outdoors at Emipre Field while renovations were getting done to BC place.

They don't have a roof but the stadium design has provisions for readily upgrading to a closed stadium unless plans have changed. The new Mosaic Stadium is pretty sweet. They have cupholders in every seat which is awesome.

except the NHL would not likely allow it until a new facility was built

Lions have never been a big ticket in BC but playing indoors has never been the problem which I illustrated as their attendance went down when they played outdoors.

From the designs I don't see how they could economically add a roof to that stadium. I believe an indoor stadium was originally talked about but cost prohibitive. Of all the cities in the league Regina is kind of the worst as far as outdoor conditions go because of the wind so I can see the benefit of an indoor stadium there but they will have no problems attracting fans (at least in the near future as they could always regress back to 9's interest when they were getting under 20k/game) regardless so why spend the extra money?

Preaching to the choir here... I moved here from Calgary. lol
I heard that it would have been close to double the price to add the roof on it, even with the way they are building the roof. By the time they want to do it, people will just whine and say it's old, why not build a new one.
My 2 cents is the roof should have been built as the power that be will regret it in the end. At least if it was indoor with roof, they would have attracted some music acts that divert to Saskatoon instead. Then they could have used it more than 10 times a year...
I have heard that the people that designed it visited alot of the newest stadiums in Canada and the States and took a bunch of ideas for designing the facilities through them. I'm excited to see what it finally looks like, even though I'd rather watch paint dry then watch CFL.

Not Aprils Fools*
City council to receive proposal on CalgaryNEXT in one month
http://www.newstalk770.com/2016/03/25/115938/
Quote:
We are about a month away from finding out what the city thinks about the CalgaryNEXT project On April 25th city council is expected to get a report from administration on the proposal from the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. One of the big issues is the location, as some don’t like the West Village.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi is seemingly throwing cold water on the idea of building it out near Balzac, saying projects like CalgaryNEXT needs “excellent transit access.”
But he says it also needs good road access and parking, so they have a few things to think about in that regard. Then, of course, is the issue of funding.

If they build it out to Balzac it will most likely be tied to a new transit line, I can't see them building a stadium without any public transit going out there.

As much as the Balzac idea is talked about, I see no way that it is going out there. Neither the city or the Flames want that.

What new transit line? If taxpayers are cold on the idea of creosote cleanup, they are going to hate the idea of funding infrastructure for Balzac. Simply adding a new turnoff from Highway 2 isn't going to really be much solace for people that live in the far south as it's simply a very long drive to get to the game and to get home especially in the middle of winter. It also totally isolates the fieldhouse from southerners.

The city isn't going to build anything to Balzac until Balzac gets incorporated into Calgary's city limits and tax district.
Any infastructure in Balzac will be all up to Rocky View County.

As I said in my previous post it would probably be a non-starter for the fieldhouse as Calgarians in the far south would be left out in the cold.

Which is why I'm a huge fan of Bunk's initial plan.
I know I wouldn't travel much to Flames games if it was in Balzac. The games would be extremely late for me on weeknights.

It has to be centrally located and really there's only two options and that's the CalgaryNext proposal or near the Stampede grounds which has a lot of roadblocks. How would you feel about the fieldhouse out there?

So an epic stadium then..
Just bump the season back a month to start in May like most CFL execs seem to be pushing for anyway, so the season wraps up in October. Then you don't need a silly roof. Wanting a permanently enclosed field for a sport played throughout the summer is what happens when you ask a city full of hockey fans what a football stadium should look like. It's so frustrating.

Not that I think this is a good idea, but I would imagine the Firepark location would be a much better alternative than Balzac! Seems crazy to put the Stadium that far from the downtown core.

This will not go to Balzac. Has Glendale... errr I mean Rocky View County even expressed interest in this?

I'd rather them tear down MacMahon and build there than Balzac...
Create some hybrid rink/stadium.
Stamps can play on some other field until she's done.
You'll get your enclosed roof.
The city can build a fieldhouse wherever they want, it'll be setup for amateur sport and accessible all the time like planned. Stadium/arena is near a transit line and is fairly core. Should be room for parking there. Combine Stamps/Flames facilities to save on costs. Costs born by ticket holders as ticket tax, some 'public money' 'cause you know that's how pro sports works, and ownership kicks in bigger.
No 'trans-formative' idea. No cleanup. But no infrastructure re-design required.
(it's basically just a horrible idea I am throwing out there...and yet I feel like it has more merits than CalgaryNext)
