Because all parties concerned want "sameness" to the greatest extent possible not greater difference

I'm suggesting that there is nothing wrong with the amount of exclusivity provided. The change I suggested wasn't strictly in regards to NCAA players but in regards to draftee's in general (Erixon for instance). The level of compensation provided by the NHL isn't good enough.

I thought they said that they informed the Preds he wouldn't be signing a few days before the trade deadline.
Now it's "they were informed prior to the deadline that they should conduct their business as they saw fit, and that the potential of signing or not signing Vesey should not be a factor in their decision".
Pretty greasy if you ask me.

There shouldn't be an option like this for Vesey in the first place. I feel bad for Nashville

Agreed heep223. Saying "conduct business as usual" is different than "He will sign!"
If I was GM at the time, and that was the vague answer I got, I would have traded him for sure. It's not just about acquiring the another player instead of waiting for Vesey, it's about what they could have received in compensation for him if it was made clear to them he wouldn't be signing.
Honestly, I don't get bent out of shape when players use this option. As it stands, it's an available avenue for them, so using it is their right. Not being upfront with the team that drafted you and hoped you could help them in the post season is greasy on all fronts.

Yup, that first paragraph seems to contain a pretty big inconsistency. If they knew he wasn't going to sign, then how could that not factor in their decisions regarding the trade deadline? "Potential of signing or not signing", but they told him he wouldn't sign?

I wonder if Boston will at least do the decent thing and trade a mid round pick for his rights, like the way Feaster did when Knight wouldn't sign with the Panthers.

That sounds more like the stupid thing if they're sure enough that he'll sign with them.
It ain't show friends, it's show business.

It's low from Vesey and his agent, but it's also dumb on the part of Poile. Your team is in a window, you're not making moves at the trade deadline because you're counting on inserting a raw rookie from the NCAA into your top 6?
Is there any wonder that team underachieves with that mindset?

It's beneficial for the player as well. If they get him signed now they can get him to their prospect development camp in the summer, get him working on things he should be working on, etc. Basically he gets off to a running start with the organization.

Everyone's always so quick to take the side of the team in these things. Not sure why, amateur drafts are inherently unfair to the athletes. This player has a chance to escape that omniscient team control over his career and he's taking it.

You're right. It really makes them look small market. That's why they keep losing players.

Yeah pretty much... I don't see why some old guy saying a teenagers name into a microphone 4 years ago is expected to install some actual obligation now.
When you get right down it the story is this... young man graduates from Harvard, doesn't take first job offer, expected to receive multiple other offers.

As a fan of a Western Canadian Prairie city, it should matter to you. If it wasn't for dispersal drafts the NHL would be ruled by the original 6 teams and perhaps some Californian teams. Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa would all be lucky to field teams of any quality.
This loop hole should be addressed.

Nothing to do with what I said (or the actual topic at hand). What does Jimmy Vesey owe anyone in the NHL? Nothin' (yet). Guy wanted his Ivy league degree (don't blame him for that one bit) now that he's set to graduate he wants to go work where he can get work that he wants to go to just like every other guy in his class. But what? He has to sign in Nashville because some guy who probably didn't even get out of his seat said his name four years ago? I don't ship that.

Maybe, but it looks like a large number of NHL executives thinks very highly of Vesey's NHL capabilities. Kreider was able to make a significant impact for the Rangers in the playoffs straight out of college.

Meh. I trust what Nashville says over that. It makes no sense for them to lie about it. I can't see them being that unprofessional. It's more likely the agent is spinning the situation.

Which is great, but when you're in your compete window that's a bonus if it happens. It's not something you plan around.
