I don't know. I would have traded Wideman for Schultz. Only because I think Wideman is the 2nd worst defenseman in the league and I would have loved having the opportunity to dump his salty on someone next year.

I'm willing to give any player in the Oilers organization a full season of play with a different team before writing them off. It will take time to break down and re build players mental game after being in an environment where losing was not just acceptable, but openly talked about by management. Where it was December and the team is wondering how good it will look when Ekblad wears their jersey next year.

Call it the Dubnyk effect, but I am not writing Schultz off as an NHLer. I think the guy has potential and needs to be coached on what it means to win. Low risk, high reward (potential) move by the Pens.

Schultz has the talent and the tools to be a top-4 offensive defenceman.

His next-level performance in the AHL during the lockout year proves that beyond a doubt.

The Oilers ruined him. Just like they've ruined so many before him.

The only question is whether he's redeemable (like Dubnyk), damaged goods who will never recover (like Cogliano), or just a hopeless basket case (like Gagner).

Schultz was playing the top 4 minutes for the Oilers and he should be in the bottom 2 D. Maybe leaving the crappy Oilers team might improve his game. I really hope so. I don't hate the guy I just the team he was playing for. Good luck to him.

I wouldnt say Cogliano was damaged goods. He recovered to carve himself a respectable career in Anaheim.

Truly an amazing return for Chiarelli. Justin Schultz doesn't need a change of scenery. Justin Schultz is not an NHL player. A trade to the Penguins will not make him stronger, smarter, or grow some balls.

He's a weak, stupid player who doesn't appear to care about getting better. If he did, he'd be part of the solution for Edmonton.

He was a 22 year old with no NHL experience being 'forced' to play 24 minutes a night against players he clearly wasn't capable of defending against on a team with no personal responsibility and being proclaimed a future Norris winner. Schultz put himself in that position, so I can't feel too bad for him, but I think under different circumstances he may have actually been a servicable top 4 player.

He still has the raw talent that made him a "sweepstakes" player. A good coach, sheltered minutes, and some time to get rid of the bad habits bestowed upon him by the loser organization and I still think there's time for him to carve out an NHL career. I hope he does, another blemish on the Oilers if he does.

He scored 45 points as a rookie.

And then never hit those numbers again, bottoming out as a 10-goal and 20-ish point player before recovering into a respectable player again.

Any time a guy's production peaks in his rookie year, you know he didn't reach his potential.

This will be an interesting project for the pens. Will be pretty telling if the pens can "fix" him.

This is a low risk high reward scenario for the Pens. That was one of the reasons I thought trading Wideman to the Oilers for Schultz would have been a smart idea. The only problem facing the team is the qualification number. That is going to be high. So you have to be certain what you have in the next 20 games. If you think he's a player, you qualify him or give him a reduced 2 year deal. If you think he's broken, you don't qualify him and you're better off for moving an unmovable salary to Edmonton. You could have almost considered it a buyout situation, with no cost to the team. But Pittsburgh snapped him up and now are likely forced to go with him for a couple of seasons or have thrown away a 3rd round pick.
