I'm hoping we can have this discussion without bringing back a looping argument, but watching the Leafs have tonight I can think of one reason you trade for Reimer instead of just waiting until July 1: Toronto might keep him.

I think they want to find a suitor for one of their goalies, but they probably don't toss away both. If they find someone to trade for Bernier, we might have competition from Toronto on July 1st for Reimer.

Toronto being our only real competition for driving the price up July 1, we could save a ton of cash trading for him.

Think he even signed for a year. I remember him with the farm team anyways at least for one season. Patrik Nilson was his name IIRC.

Detroit red wings writer linking us to Howard in off season:

Q: I saw a rumor floating around that speculated the Flames trading (Jonas) Hiller and a pick to the Jets for Pavelec. If there is any truth to it do you think it would wise for us to swoop in and offer Howard to Calgary? – Jeff

A: Calgary will need a couple of goalies next season, since Hiller and the injured Karri Ramo are unrestricted after the season. Nothing is going to happen this season. And I think the only way they assume Howard's contract in the off-season is if the Red Wings retain some salary or (more likely) they're able to ship a contract they don't want back to Detroit. If the Red Wings are able to trade Howard before next season, Calgary might be at the top of a short list of possible destinations.
