Default Flames recall Ortio

Every time goalies come up, I marvel at Kipper. Both his endurance, and durability. Ramo's tweaked something a couple of times now and missed time, as have many other goalies obviously. Kipper? Seasons of 74, 74, 76, 76, 73, 71, and 70 games starting from 05-06. Like, really?

I think Ortio's confidence when he got sent down was an all-time low and did not recover from it. In the AHL, he started off badly that didn't help boost his confidence. He should learn from Ramo. Instead of pouting and giving up after being demoted he took it as a challenge and came back strong. Even before we thought Ortio's career in North America were done when the Flames loaned him to a team in Finland. He wasn't cutting it in the AHL back then but when he got back to North America he came up very strong. I really think we will see a different Joni Ortio this time around.

Let's try to staple him on the bench for a month and see the differences!

Anyone else think that the goalie coach has a part to play in all this?

Do you have any evidence that he "pouted" and "gave up"? Have you considered the possibility that maybe there were just details in his game, like glove, stick, and body positioning, and basic timing that were plain off, having played two hockey games in all of October/November? Do me a favor and listen to Brad Pascal's comments on Ortio:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/the-big-...ate-for-grant/

and report back to me all about Ortio's pouting, lacking confidence, etc.

Ortios biggest flaw is the Kipper connection. Everybody wants/expect him to be the next Kipper, but he's practically a career AHL goalie at this point. Hopefully he can prove me and others wrong.

I'm guilty.

But a fair comparison is the slow starts that got Kipper kicked off the Sharks. Ortio ha proven he needs to play himself ready. Kipper's season starts were horrid.

Not uncommon for goalies. It's not that they aren't in shape, but more the game speed. Alain Vigniault told Henrick Lundquist he needed to be more ready at the start of this season, at the the end of last season.

Goalies are truly about catching lightning in a bottle.

Wait are you like Ortio's close buddy or teammate? Great job slandering one of our own players.

Ortio is 24.

Kipper was 27 during the 03/04 season (his 1st with the Flames)

You just made my point. He's not Kipper, deal with it.

He's closer to Leland Irving unless he dramatically improves. He's soon UFA and hasn't cracked the ####tiest goaltending roster in the NHL.

Dude, what the heck are you talking about? Where did I say Ortio was pouting and gave up? I was referring to Ramo. I said instead of pouting and given up... he took the challenge. I am not convince that Ortio is done as a lot of CP is making him too. I don't need to report to you. Read before you accuse me of something.

Looks like Hartley is going with Hiller down the stretch here with no backtoback until the trade deadline.

Wow, slandering?? I didn't slandered Ortio. I merely said I THINK his confidence... It is a different from saying I KNOW. I didn't say I know his confidence... I like Ortio and I feel bad for him having a bad season so far both in the NHL and the AHL. I would love for him to do well when he got the chance. I guess you should read before you accuse someone. I am not claiming I know it all and It is very rare that I blame any Flame player.

With that news I'm looking forward to the addition of Matthews/Liane/Puljujarvi to the Flames organization.

Hiller will be pulled within the first few games. I'd really like to see Ortio have another chance in net. Its not like we're going to magically make the playoffs.

Hartley can't win with either goalie but man I hate hiller in net he is just so bad. I would rather rely on ortho for no reason at all, because I don't think ortio is any better.

Pretty much what they did with Ramo earlier this season and then Ramo went on a tear, we'll see what happens and basically it will depend on how Hiller responds with the next few games, this will essentially determine when they play Ortio.

Can someone explain the rationale to me here?

Hiller is not signed beyond this season.
Neither is Ramo...
There is NO OTHER plan to have any NHL goaltenders that we are aware of...
We are far enough out of a playoff spot.

....................

so that leaves Ortio to be given a run to prove whether he's capable of NHL or not.
And yet we aren't starting him and giving him a bunch of games here?

Count me extremely confused and dumbfounded. It defies logic to me.
Please tell me they aren't considering re-signing Hiller, PLEASE!

The Flames are still in the playoff chase. Of course it's unlikely, but that's not the point. Professional sports teams have a mandate to win and deciding to arbitrarily run with Ortio at this stage would be anathema to that mandate.

There will (probably) be plenty of time later in the season to experiment, but for now I as a fan am glad that my team is still trying to win and make the playoffs.
