Once this turns around, I really hope that companies remember the treatment we are getting. Turnaround is fair play and putting Eastern and Quebec workers at the bottom of the rehire list and vendors out east being shut out or not given much consideration would be nice to see.

Can someone explain this logic to me? Eastern Canada buys oil from saudi arabia instead of from Alberta. Alberta hurts and continues to send money to eastern Canada.

This is a month and a half old but Ceci says the equilization payments will continue from Alberta. As far as i'm aware it will take about three years for transfer payments from alberta to slow.

What does that even mean? The government of Alberta doesn't make equalization payments. Transfer payments come from the general revenue of the federal government, collected from taxpayers in every province and territory. Is he saying that Alberta won't receive equalization this year, despite the economic situation? Or does our provincial finance minister not even know how equalization works?

Maybe those who understand this also understand that this is still a transfer of wealth from Alberta to other provinces, and we just don't care to be obtuse about it.

Does anyone truly think it will come back? The only question is how robust is the demand going to be from non-OECD countries?

The decrease shown perfectly correlates with the Great Recession.

The peak is in 2005 and decline since then. There is clearly some structural adjustments going on in the mid-2000s and exacerbated by the recessions.

GDP now is higher than 2007 but gasoline demand has not rebounded. Even with low prices.

Why? The answers are around us. Energy efficient and alternative fuel cars. Surging public transit investment and ridership. Dreaded bike lanes. Urbanization.

Needless to say, this trend will be monitored closely.

The trend starts in 2008. We are just seeing recovery in the US economy now and you see the decrease flattening, so I would say, based on your graph that demand is actually holding steady right now, even in the face of significant economic headwinds.
