That would be such a hilariously bad contract.

I like Russell. He's a good team guy and honestly I'd be happy for him if he got a contract like that. Just not with the Flames.
His contract right now is an absolute steal. He's played well above it since the day he got here. We got him for a 4th round pick. Absolute fleecing by Feaster. Now it's time to turn that fleecing into another solid asset going forward.
The ideal situation is BT gets a good auction going for him by the deadline. The Flames get a good return. Russell gets to make a decent playoff run and then Russell cashes in as a UFA. Everybody wins.

Sticky this to the OP. Sureloss is wise.

Hamilton's cap hit is 5.75, Brodie is 4.65.
Sorry Russell but you aren't worth 5.5.

I definitely don't rag on Russell like many on here do, and I would not be opposed to extending him.
But he's not worth 5 years at 5.5.
I hope they extend him for 3.5MM and he rounds out the top 4. The bottom pair is filled in with guys from the minors until Engelland and Smid are traded or their deals expire.

I hope that's how GMs around the league see his worth. Probably get a better return for him.

Yep, I agree completely.
I'm a Russell fan and I would trade him. I'd consider bringing him back for $3 or $3.5 but that's it.

Am I on crazy pills to think his contract right now is about what he's worth?

Came into Calgary after being ran out of St.Louis. Now worth $5.5 million per year in less than 3 years. Well that escalated quickly......

Even 3.5 is too much for what he brings. $2m max.

If the Flames don't trade Russell, it would be a huge missed opportunity. His perceived value versus his actual value might be at record levels right now.
Russell is a possession black hole (thanks Street Pharmacist for the graph), but he got the brilliant idea to use that to his advantage and turn himself into a shot blocking machine. I think he actually backs up way more than he needs on rushes, just to drive his shot blocks. This has somehow created demand for him, despite his underlying numbers.
I think Kent Wilson said this but "blocking shots are like catching mice in traps, its better than the current alternative, but suggests an underlying problem". The underlying problem - Russell is poor possession wise and gives up way more shots and chance when he's on the ice vs not on the ice.
I seriously hope we don't resign him, almost regardless of the price.

Love Rusty, but I would drive him to the airport myself if he wants north of $3.5MM.

This reminders me of the "Cody Franson will get $5M-6M on a long term deal" talk from last year. Lots of speculation to artificially inflate his value but at the end of the day, he'll likely have to settle for way less.

We should be able to squeeze him in if he signs somewhere in the 3-3.5 range. Any more than that and I don't think he's worth it for us. He's a great #5 d-man who can fill in the top 4.
I suspect his value in trade may exceed the value of us re-signing him. Can't wait to see what happens.
