Russell is one of the few guys who could genuinely return a late 1st round draft pick towards the deadline. Contending teams really covet good quality depth blueliners for the playoff push. He would really shore up the bluelines of either Washington or LA.

Scary thought - his agent also represents Engelland and Hiller who both managed to get big contracts out of Treliving.

Flames have too much money tied up in the top 3 defenseman, as well as the two bottom pairing defensemen.
Not to mention that there's some good talent in the pipes with Hickey, Kylington, Andersson and Wotherspoon. You can't have a blueline costing 35 million when the cap is 70. You need to make sacrifices

Russell is walking into a very weak UFA market and is in the prime of his career. He's coming off a "show me" contract, and he's going to cash in.
Good for him.
I hope we trade him.

Maybe if he volunteers.

I just wish people would remember that Kris is on a 2.6M (7th highest paid Dman on the Flames) contract THIS year and cut him some slack. To quote Bob that is a 'fantastic bargain'. Especially in the game threads, a lot of people seem to think he should be Chris Pronger out there, which is incredibly unrealistic.
I'm don't know about this 5.5 number, that sounds high to me, but right now, he makes 2.6 and is playing above that contract. Last year he played WAY above that. He's been a good player for the Flames, and if his time here is almost up then so be it. But I think he gave us excellent value while he was here.

An excellent point. Insiders get most of their info from agents who in turn likely ask for this type of lip service.

Or he is doing this for Treliving. If you were not that familiar with Russell and read that article you would think Russell is a legitimate 2nd pairing d-man and the only reason the Flames can't hold on to him is cap reasons. Come step right up and give up your 1st round pick.

It's hard to believe that Kris Russell could sign a contract with the Flames where he is making more money than TJ Brodie. I like Kris Russell, but if those numbers are anywhere close to his contract demands, he needs to be moved at the trade deadline.

Another quote from Hartley, when asked about scratching Wideman early last year: "I'm a coach, not a banker" I don't really care how much he makes. I don't have this internal pay to performance ratio that he must meet. I just don't like his game

McKenzie should shut his trap about player salaries until a contract is signed.

Absolutely he was one of Feaster's better moves as GM. I think he's been a good player for the organization under his current contract and hope he gets a deal like the one Bob is discussing. I just don't want him getting his retirement contract on Flames dime.

6-7 defenceman on a 5-year, $25 million contract?
He's a replacement level defenceman you sign 1 year at a time.
Who would really make that mistake July 1?

What the hell? Russell potentially making more than Brodie?
That's crazy talk.

by 5.5 for 5 years Bob meant 3.5 for 5 years right?
If he wants 5.5x5 ship him up to Edmonton. He's a 4-5 defensemen no reason to pay him like a 2-3

If some of these players were as good as their press clippings, this team would not have such a horrible record. I would argue that after Gio and Brodie, our defense is not that great.
A 1st round pick for Russell would be amazing and renders trading him the obvious choice.
