yeah, but they don't really need it next year - there's about 18m coming off the books this summer for UFAs and I don't think they'll try to retain many of those. But by getting rid of Phaneuf, they free up a lot of cap long-term which will help if they indeed sign Stamkos.
Plus they could always buyout Greening and Michalek this summer. That would free up 4.7m next season as well (2.4m would count against the cap in 2017-18, however). Worth it if they need it.

This has probably been said dozens of times but haven't read the thread, the Leafs didn't help the Sens they made them worse by giving them such a low hockey IQ defenceman.

The biggest winner in this trade is Dion himself
I hope he does well in Ottawa

Phaneuf is overpaid but he's still a serviceable defenseman in the NHL. I think he's a great second pairing guy. It's just that contract. That would be hard to swallow if I were a Sens fan.

I would imagine his now current equipment managers are waiting for him in Ottawa.

Even though he's been traded, isn't he still officially the Leafs' captain until the Governor General accepts his resignation and appoints a successor?

I wonder if he's gonna walk right into the Sens dressing room and turn the music up.

Hard to judge - Phaneuf is a trainwreck. He can't skate anymore. Can't really shoot all that well. Misjudges plays. IQ of an empty paper bag.
But - is he worse than Cowen, Borowiecki, or Wiercioch? That's the question. I am not sure if people on CP understand how terrible the Sens defense is beyond Karlsson and Methot, and Ceci when not being overplayed.
Can they handle that brutal salary for four more years? Only if Phaneuf can live up to second pairing standards.
Michalek was good for the Sens - killed penalties, anchored a second line when healthy, but injured a lot. Watching Karlsson's interview, he was a close friend to EK as well.
Getting rid of Greening and Cowen's salaries (a pair of terrible signings by Bryan Murray) is a definite plus and I'm sure Sens fans will be celebrating. Time will tell if Phaneuf's salary and play will make up for this cap dump.

Custom pro-stock. (lie, curve, weight, flex). A chance new Equipment guy doesn't have em.

How the heck did this caveman get Elisha Cuthbert, oh yeah, money. I wonder if he communicates via foot stomps and grunting.

Phaneuf isn't as bad as most people thinks he is. If it wasn't for his massive contract with the Leafs, I'm sure he's a great d-man that can really shoot the puck and he will hit you, unlike Wideman who doesn't shoot and doesn't hit. Pair Phaneuf up with a sound defensive d-man and that D-line will be pretty solid.

She has quite a bit of it herself. It has to be something else... but what could it be?
