Sens Acquire Phaneuf in 9 Player Trade
Ottawa Senators @Senators #Sens get Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey in exchange for Cowen, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and 2nd-rounder in 2017.

The Senators have front row seats to see the Leafs. It's like the Oilers trading with the Flames for Wideman. Why would they want Phaneuf on that contract? Is Murray going mad?

What is it with Phaneuf being traded in big deals involving lots of junk players? I suppose the Senator get an NHL top 4 defenseman for little in the way of solid assets but surely the Oilers could have offered the Leafs more?

Wow is about all I can say. Sens tweet that no salary was retained either way. Toronto has Phaneuf off the books.
EDIT: Actually the tweet says "No salary will retained by either team over the trade's entirey." I originally read that to mean no salary at all is retained but the wording makes it sound like it also could mean, "Toronto retains one year of Phaneuf's salary at 50% then nothing after." Not sure if something like that is allowed or if the retention has to be over the entirety of the remaining contract. I'm probably trying to read way too much into this. The wording just seems weird.
