Yeah, I wouldn't want to pair him with Karlsson after the season Karlsson is having. Putting him on the 2nd pair makes a lot of sense from that standpoint. Makes even more sense if, like myself, you feel Dion is a much better 2nd pairing guy than a first pairing, regardless of what he gets paid.

Karlsson, Methot,

However it is pretty telling that they were willing to send their captain to a bitter rival.
Ottawa's depth might be worse than Toronto's though. You've got Karlsson, and 5 guys who should be #6 or not in the NHL. This is not a case of him going to a team that can shelter him, if anything his minutes will go up.

Since l'm too lazy to do it, does anybody have a salary/contract comparison for both sides?

Toronto wins hands down.

-Get rid of Phaneuf and his greasy contract
-Gets a 2nd round pick from a bottom 15 team
-Michelak has been decent in recent years but it's not like he's a terrible play right?

And even though Cowan has stagnated a little, some fresh scenery might be good for a defenseman just entering his prime.

Cap hits:
Phaneuf $7m until 2021
Michalek - $4m until 2017
Cowan - $3.1m until 2017
Greening - $2.65m until 2017

Everyone else is on entry level deals I believe. Ottawa actually gains cap space for this year and next.

Pick is in 2017... who knows where Ottawa will be then.

Disagree. ...Phaneuf will see his minutes go down quite a bit as he is no longer being leaned on to be THE guy as he was in Leafland.

Man... good work by the Shanahan people. That's a lot of longterm bad money out the door.

Babcock has been giving him the 3rd hardest minutes, after Reilly and Hunwick. He was no longer in a shutdown role. And playing less on the PK than at any point in his career.

Travis Yost @travisyost12m12 minutes ago
Karlsson has played ~ 67% of his career w/:
Kuba
Phillips
Cowen
Campoli
Borowiecki
Sutton
Hale
Lee
Carkner
I think Phaneuf might help..

Correct, he's here to do his job, which is expansive and doesn't involve trades or player movement.

Yea, too bad they're gonna blow that newly found cap space on Stamghost.

And by "too bad" I mean too bad for Leafs fans. I personally don't care.
