After watching a few of these official / player videos, I've come to two conclusions:
1) No one ever waits around to check and see if he's okay
2) Hands tend to come up right before impact to brace themselves
So really, not sure why Wideman's is so different. It's just that one camera angle where your brain just assumes he's looking straight ahead and therefore targeting him. If the overhead angle was the only one that caught it, this thread likely wouldn't even exist.

I have no idea what happened and neither does anyone else because the story has changed so many times it is ridiculous. First it was Wideman had a few stingers but he was fine other than that. Then he changed his story to he was woozy. Originally everyone was questioning why the Flames did not look into if Wideman had a concussion. Now it comes out days later all of the sudden he was diagnosed with a concussion right after the game. It sounds like a lot of trying to cover their ass's from both the Flames and Wideman to me. Simply an opinion. Now today he is out there doing full practice. I am sure Henderson is milking it too. What a mess.
Wideman would say he was fine in order to stay in the game but whatever Wideman's story was the trained concussion spotter wanted him to go through the protocol as he suspected a concussion, so Wideman actually having a concussion is pretty believable.

I imagine that's the first level (Bettman) appeal, so I expect it's a non-issue. He might lower it a bit but I doubt it will be by enough to avoid an independent arbitrator appeal by the PA/Flames.
Henderson's concussion demonstrates that it's a systemic problem beyond the Flames.
If the OA wanted to ensure the safety of their members, perhaps they should work on their own concussion protocol. We've seen the Muzzin, Smith and Weber incidents (to name a just few) that were all just as likely to result in a concussion. Considering the two referee system, there is no reason the refs shouldn't follow the same (if not even more cautious) protocol as players.

well, this kind of attention will not help Wideman.

Who really cares about some plug that abused syntetic testosterone throughout his career?
Seriously like he is one to piont fingers at any one. Guys a plug that abused steroids and synthetics to even have a AHL career.
I've been saying this from the beginning. If the ref kept going and then said he had a concussion after and no one blinks an eye, why is it so hard to believe the same about Wideman?
I get that the optics of the play look bad but the amount of people that truly believe he intended to do this blows my mind.
The guy has ZERO history in the NHL.
Why would he hit a linesman over a missed call? Wouldn't he hit the referee? And not to mention who on earth thinks "I'm angry, and there's the linesman who didn't do anything wrong, so I'm going to hit him!"?
He apologized on the ice before anyone even thought this was a story at all and without anyone forcing him to do it.
Why does everyone ignore his feet? He tries to stop at the last minute.
He has two hands on his stick BEFORE contact with the official, and they're too close together to be called a crosscheck but for whatever reason it is. I believe he raised his arms out of instinct. I've done it plenty of times on the ice. The combination of that and Henderson skating backwards causes him to be caught off guard and fall. It doesn't take a lot of force to push over an unsuspecting person. It looks a lot worse than it actually was.
How come no one calling the game or during intermission talked about it at all?
It's absolute hacks like Eric Francis who pick up stories like this and twist it into something it isn't to get attention. Then it blows up on social media when people who see the clip completely out of context (and only ONE angle of it) start complaining and becomes a PR disaster for the NHL.
Yes Wideman should have been more aware, but incidental contact is an occupational hazard that all officials are well aware of, and some onus has to be on Henderson for not being aware as well. I reffed hockey for years and used to get bumped into all the time.
Personally I believe 5 games would be fine because yes, Wideman should have been more aware and the league needs to protect their officials and do some damage control, but the people that think 20 games is the right amount are completely out to lunch in my opinion.
I feel bad for Wideman. I'm 100% positive (because to me, it just doesn't make sense) he didn't mean to do it but because the story blew up way more than it should have he's handed one of the longest suspensions in league history. It's a joke. The lack of common sense used by some people is astounding. I'll defend Dennis Wideman to the death on this one.

It matters because it brings more notoriety and attention to the incident.
For the most part the media attention has died down over this. I think that increases the likelihood the suspension is reduced. However when someone brings it up - especially in such poor taste as what Peters did - then the attention returns back to Wideman.

Just for giggles, here is Larry Brooks bourbon fueled "take" on things.
I haven't read "Brooksies" stuff since Torts left the big apple, but it's good to see he still has visions of grandeur and complete license to continually embellish things and STILL is able to work in a dig at the league and Jeremy Jacobs all these years later. He just can't help himself at times.
Any team that doesn't follow concussion protocol should forfeit a 1st round pick and be fined a million dollars?
When most people in the arena that night had no idea what occurred, let's be completely petulant with their punishment!!!
