I just can't buy the didn't see him defense, when he was looking 70-80 feet up the ice. Pro athletes don't have the awareness of a 14 year old kid texting on a sidewalk, they are typically hyper aware of their surroundings.

Good to see I'm not the only one that believes that it was fully intentional. I think he made attempts to not injure the official (shifting to the right to minimize impact), but I 100% believe he meant to hit him and he did it in a snap decision due to frustration.

I just wish Wideman and Henderson could hash this out/settle it together without the whole hearing. Next time they're both in Arizona or Florida go for a round of golf together and just laugh the whole thing off or something along those lines.

It was so reckless and dumb that I did a double take and had a wtf moment? He had to of been disoriented its just so dumb,I find it hard to believe anyone would do that unless something was going on upstairs.

I agree with you totally. I've taken a hit like that and can say that I was able to walk and see fine but was totally disoriented, wasn't thinking clearly. My only thought process at the time was to get away from the situation. You said fight or flight response and that describes it exactly. After a couple of minutes I regained my senses but still couldn't fully comprehend what had happened until later. Not saying he is guaranteed innocent but I can believe that he had no rational thought process at the time.

There is no way Dennis Wideman did that on purpose. He had his bell rung, was obviously disoriented, a blurred figure was in front of him when he looked up, and he put his stick up crossways to protect himself, reflexively. It's ridiculous for anyone to be considering discipline for this incident.
The media should be ashamed for sensationalizing something out of nothing.

I agree with everything, except that I waffling between suspension and no suspension. I don't think he realized who he hit even. However, he still hit him. I can see a small suspension, or none at all. I voted no suspension originally, but perhaps the intent (or lack thereof, for those that agree with our opinions) will have a bearing on what discipline will be dished out.

To me, it seems as though he wanted to get to the bench pretty bad and thought he was way out of the play (puck in the other end). Ref in the way was just icing on the cake.
So I'm not defending him or absolving him either. It's a super weird situation, with others potentially at fault as to how they handled him afterwards. Chris Simon was a loose cannon, but that play where he lumbered a guy after being hit into the boards was similar. The inner beast came out. Refs in mma are subject to this as well where fighters keep on swinging despite being tapped out and in lala land. I'm hoping for at least a bit of leniency here.

No reality took over. Even without social media Wideman gets suspended. He made a dumb play and it's going to cost him. Might cost us a top 5 pick as well.

Have to say as well, I've always been impressed by the type of licks Wideman has taken over the years and been in on the next shift. A full body scan of the guy may be worthwhile. Our trainers are definitely pros but maybe Wideman has become a master of answering protocol questions

Sawon twitter that the NHL Officials Association will be at the hearing with their lawyers. Combine that with all the media attention and the NHL is under pressure to suspend him for a long time.
If it is minimal or no suspension due to concussion then the Flamed will be in hot water for not doing anything to get their player put of the game.

The incident has created a public relations nightmare for the NHL. That video clip of Wideman hitting the linesman is being played on every TV station in North America. Those who don't know the game will look at that incident and take with them an favourable view of the game. Then there's the officials who referee these games and doing what's right to ensure them the league takes the issue of player/referee incidents seriously.
It doesn't look good for Wideman even with his post game apologies. It's interesting that when you slow and breakdown the video that there seems to be a wide variety of opinions from sportswriters and broadcasters as to what Wideman should and could have done to avoid that collision.

It is also surprising the coach didn't take him out as a precaution. it might have helped his cause considering how uncharacteristically Wideman acted.

The media attention will make this very bad, agreed.
Interesting the officials will have lawyers at the hearing.

With what is going on here now, there will probably be a suspension. Hopefully for Wideman it's no more than let's say 5 games.
Don't think a suspension is fair, but it seems inevitable now.
