Terrible in every facet. Nobody was even okay.
That is really discouraging - I thought they had maybe turned the corner with 3 Ws and an OTL in their last 4 prior to this one.

Maybe it was just an off night or maybe they have no confidence in front of Ortio. They played significantly better the prior game despite allowing the comeback.

We'll see how they respond

Hope so, he hasn't been the same since his shoulder injury. Maybe more responsibility will light a fire under him.

Oh yeah, congrats to him.

Ortio is easy to blame, he hasn't been very good at all. There is no excuse for a 3.41 GAA and .892 SV%. Sure the team could be playing better a whole, but his play is far below that. His numbers are closer to Simpson who is no more than an average ECHL goaltender than they are to Poulin who never played a game this year until he was traded to the Flames.

The team played well enough in front of both Poulin and Gillies. The team has zero confidence in front of Ortio and they play pretty much like the Flames did in early October when he's in net. They know if they make a mistake it'll be in the back of the net and they play too tight, which compounds the problem and they make more mistakes.

Mental strength is a huge part of goaltending. In terms of raw skill, there probably isn't much difference between Ortio and Ramo. However, it seems like whenever things don't go Ortio's way he plays terribly which doesn't help the situation.

I don't follow the Heat closely enough to know if the problems are Huska's fault, but some on here who follow them seem to think so. It's really a double whammy. If these guys aren't developing as they should, it hurts the NHL club eventually. It also reduces their trade value when you start looking at deals. That is a little troubling.

Just like some on the big board think everything that goes wrong is Hartley's fault? Some people just love to blame coaches for a variety of things.

Hard for most of us to judge Huska.

^Huska has to use the same system as Hartley. So I blame Hartley.

Nor do I but when it comes to the AHL I'm not sure coaches are judged as much on wins/losses as they are in the NHL as not all coaches in this league are dealt the same hands. I imagine the Flames are more concerned with how the team is playing and players developing. If they are battling hard and losing close games I don't see a problem. If it gets to the point where the team is losing a lot and looking bad then that's probably not a good situation for player development.

It is concerning looking at the stats of some of these players but ultimately I have faith the Flames know what's best here one way or another.

6-2 Win for the good guys. Poulin with 31 saves on 33 shots. Good games from Freddie Hamilton, Agostino and Derek Grant. The usual suspects.

Grant with 5 points tonight... you have to think the Flames give him a look soon.

He's on a roll, looking at the stats he is 3rd in the ahl in goal scoring. Goal and and 2 assists for Emile Poirier tonight.

Looks like they took away one of Grant's assists. Back to a 4 point night and not a 5 point night. Won't get that NHL call up now.

Just read this in the Calgary Herald (link) today:

The single statistic not in his favour?

One more appearance at the NHL level makes him waiver eligible. Meaning if he’s summoned — and suits up — the Flames would have to expose Grant to every team in the league if they want to return him to Stockton.
Perhaps later in the season with expanded rosters, when they call him up he will stay up.

I don't think the Flames would be too concerned about losing a 25 year old that hasn't proven anything in the NHL. If he can't stick with a poor Flames team, I doubt he gets claimed.

Half way thru the game and the Heat already have 30 shots against the Manitoba goalie. Only one goal though, Agostino from Johnson and Grant.

1-1

Poulin started again as well, after starting yesterday.

Imagine if Gillies was healthy?

Ortio would be 3rd string in the AHL. Boy has his stock dropped. Mine as well call him Joni "Oilio".
