I don't have a problem with the contract, for what its worth. It isn't great but they had to sign it in my opinion.
|
*sigh*
I didn't post anything about Gio in the first place, I was just pointing out the silly overreaction to a rough start without looking at his entire body of work.
Looks like I was right to post the fishing icon since I'm getting plenty of bites.

Disagree.
Since being named captain and under Hartley's activate the D system Giordano has been fantastic but the two seasons prior he was pretty terrible. The first two seasons of his current 5 year deal was iffy. Lots of old boys club, hopes he could be traded along with Iginla, Bouwmeester etc comments.

Saying you were against it is disingenuous on your part. From his signing thread:

Happy overall. Almost 7 million is a big pill to swallow for 6 years, for a guy his age but he was going to get paid by someone next summer if it wasn't us and this is a contract that will be very workable in our cap for the type of player and the role he plays for us. You hope injuries don't make him miss too much time.
Great off season for our GM, thought this contract was going to be around seven and a half.
|
And for what it's worth, you're far from the worst offender on this topic. Here are Erik Estrada's (aka "This Contract in a Franchise Stunting Anchor"'s) two posts:

Good to have this done before the season so the uncertainty doesn't linger.

This PGT is as bad as the first period.
I'll take the win on the road.

Bennett just a beast out there around the net. What a snipe.
Excellent game by Frolik. Didn't know he had wheels like that, guy can skate. Backlund, Gio good games.
Hudler continues to be absolutely invisible. It almost looks like he doesn't want to be there. Shying away from contact, losing every puck battle, doesn't skate past first 2 or 3 strides. He had 1 play where he actually skates hard to the net the entire game and then didn't see him for like 5 mins after. Hopefully he's fighting through an injury and not just counting down the days before going to Europe.

See I can respect that postion based on thing like that how they can annoy you 100%.
I'm never going to be a fan of handing out any thing more then 3 year or 4 year deals ( in special cases) to players 30 plus years of age.

Panarin is freaking unreal good as well. Super impressed by him when I've watched him. Let's not put it all on Kane, Panarin looks a lot more similar to Gaudreau/Kane then it looks like he's riding anyone's coattails. In fact perhaps part of why Kane is having such an unreal season is playing with another sicko like Panarin.

Giordano was way better than 'reliable' over the course of his last deal. $4m was the going rate for a solid #4 when he signed it, and he was of top pairing quality for 2 of the 5 years of the deal, 3 if you want to count this one as he's really been coming on. Even if the first two years could only be described as 'reliable', he's been much better since. He's been a bonafide top pairing guy for at least 50% of his current deal by my estimation, and usually those guys go for $7m+ AAV.
Also, there aren't 'tons' of reliable defensemen out there, they're easily one of the most sought after commodities. Most teams only have 3-5, some teams like the Oilers only have 0-1. I think you're selling Giordano short by a fair margin.

I still think it's crazy that the Johnny Hockey nickname has completely caught in the league to the point where even rival fans gladly use it.
Suck it Healy.

Your original post said "Good deal" and "Happy overall". To now describe yourself as "Not Thrilled" is certainly misleading at least.
And if you weren't referring to yourself when you said "Pretty disingenuous to label anyone that was against it as changing their tune.", then who were you referring to?

Too strong of a word IMO. He was a solid #4 at least, and much better than what guys like Wideman and Russell are this year. He was worth $4m (though perhaps not much more) during each of those first 2 seasons.

Boring game. Not much to talk about that game other then Bennets first goal and Ramo being solid again.
30th ####ty team beaten by the 29th ####tiest. It was a win tho granted. It was just terrible all around.

He was leading points for dmen and Norris favourite last season through 65 games. He would have been a shoe in as the best defenseman in the league.
Gio is an elite d man.
Edit: you were talking about Gio right? I didn't really verify haha

I think that's the wrong conclusion to draw. Panarin is 3 times the player Yakupov is and probably is part of the reason why Kane is doing so well. First time I saw him this season I thought I was watching a Kane or a Gaudreau type player. If you haven't watched a lot of the Blackhawks watch the kid closely, he's the real deal and isn't just riding Kane's coattails. Panarin drives a lot of offence himself.
