Gio is going to be worth full value of that contract. Right now he's probably worth more than what he's making, and later he might be worth less than he's making, but not by so much that it'll be a problem. It'll all even out in the long run.
Fair enough, to a point. I was never thrilled with the contract and didn't change my tune after the rough start. Many other posters were the same. Pretty disingenuous to label anyone that was against it as changing their tune.

You're the one that brought it up.

I'm thrilled Giordano is back playing high level hockey again, that doesn't change my worry about what a 39 year old Giordano will be like.

Yeah Panarin's stats have been pretty inflated due to playing with the #1 offensive player. Kane would make Yakupov look like a top line winger.

Bennett has generated a lot of his offense without much help. Just playing like a bull dog and crashing the net, making something out of nothing a lot of the time. Lately Backlund coming on and Frolik coming back have helped him stay hot, though. Those two deserve credit for their play. Backlund may be playing the best hockey of his career the past 5-10 games. His power drive to the net in OT the other night is something I've never seen him do. Maybe Bennett's playing style is rubbing off?

Definitely worth mentioning again. I wonder if the Flames still "regret" re-signing Giordano now as some posters love to keep pushing?

hopefully backlund can keep playing consistently as he usually has a few hot spurts but always falls back towards mediocrity

Ok, so you get a pass, but there are a LOT of people here who were suddenly upset with both the AAV and term of the deal because of the poor start. I know that it's normal to go with the recency factor when looking at players, but it seemed pretty short-sighted to turn on our captain so quickly just because he was finally being paid appropriately. He's one of the really good things about this team, and people stopped appreciating him because he got a well-deserved contract. It just annoys me.

How the hell did you draw to this conclusion?

You brought up his NEXT contract and I simply pointed out it has not even started yet.

I'm over joyed he is back to playing well. I just want to see how he does for the first 2 years of that contract be fore we start proclaiming it is a home run.

Out side of the last 2 years he has been nothimg special. He has not even finished a whole season for those 2 years playing at a consistent level.

I get uour pissed for me saying something about you liking 2 teams earlier in GT but no need to jump to conclusions.

I have always had my doubts about signing 31 year old players to long term and big money contracts.

Yeah. The last 23 games are a good way to evaluate signing Gio to that contract.

In all seriousness, I hate using stretches of games to evaluate players. It's an 82 game season. Not fair just to wipe out the bad. His slow start is understandable though in this case.

That's BS. He has played way above his contract value the last 5-6 years. And people just have to accept, a big chunk of his current deal, has to be looked at as back pay for that fact.

Have to side with the Oilers fan on that point. The Vancouver "Loser Point" Canucks winning percentage is abysmal, yet they're right there thanks to stretching it past 60 minutes so many damn times. Consistently getting outplayed and outshot in recent games. Probably piss poor in the 'advanced' stats categories.

When the #### are other teams gonna sit long enough so we can catch up in GP?

We've played like 5 games less than some teams in the west ffs.

I honestly didn't remember that was you, so...nope, not mad.

And he's been a solid defenseman for a long time, it's just his offensive game blossomed over the last few years. That's not to say he didn't have the game in the first place, it's just that Hartley allowed him to go do it and the system complemented his skill set. So yes, while not an elite player until the last couple of years, he's been one of our more reliable guys for many years now, yet that doesn't seem to count much in people's estimation of what he's worth.

I don't want to get into a long debate about Giordano here though, so let's just leave it at that.

A LOT? Really?
And are you not doing the same thing by busting out a "told ya so" based on a 23 game subset of games?
I don't have a problem with the contract, for what its worth. It isn't great but they had to sign it in my opinion.

Johnny finally scored on his favourite shot, what a goal. 19 year old Benzo is on fire right now!

Wideman'a ice time was cut significantly this game. Some would say that's a long time coming.

I was in and out of the game. Did Ferland get hurt? Only 6 minutes of playing time.

Reliable yes. Special or elite definitely not. There are tons of dmen that are reliable.

Well, including his poor start where he was coming back from a serious injury, he is now tied for 14th in Defensemen scoring for the season. So he's good there, too.

He fell and took an accidental knee from the BJs Karlson.

Nope.

5v5 Ice Time, last 3 games:

13.5
14.6
13.0

The only difference is power play time, because we had none.

I'd say 'A LOT' is an understatement.
