This is one area where we really miss guys like Cammalleri and Iginla. We have the one timer threat from the point (even though we don't use it), but we don't have that threat from the halfboards. I guess Mason Raymond somewhat fills that void, but he loses puck battles / can't get the puck into the zone so he's useless on the PP.

If Talbot doesn't stand on his head in first period, could have easily been 4-0 after first.

This game made me realize one thing; we'll never contend for anything until we have an elite goalie. Too rarely does one of our goalies actually steal us a game, you need to get that in the playoffs usually. That +.92 area, the coach keeps saying our most important player is our goalie. Well neither of our goalies are that valuable. We need a top 15 guy before this team goes anywhere.
Currently the Flames are 26th in the league. I'd say a large part of that is due to the goalies. Ramo at best will be a top 30 goalie in the league, Hiller a top 50. Ortio is below.9 in the AHL. We absolutely need a goaltender that can make a positive difference. It's been more than a decade since we got a real #1.

Meh. Oil are 2 points further out of last and a potential too 5 pick, and it cost us a point.
Whatever. Could be worse I guess.

I agree in principle but I don't think this game was any indication of this. Hiller did well. The anaemic special teams and half assed effort was the problem in this game specifically.

The Flames had no control over your the other team's goalie plays. They did have control over the final 40 where they did nothing offensively. Shot totals aside, they played well defensively as there were few chances. However, when your spending the last 40 minutes simply defending you're going to lose

If and when the Flames get the best goalie - whoopdie-doo! If they're either always hemmed in their own zone or they play peripheral hockey in the opposition zone, they're not gonna score enough goals to overcome a deficit. You can't rely on just one position to bail out the whole frickin team. Just doesn't work that way.

I get that the Flames did play poorly in parts of the game, but Talbot when them the game. How often do we get that? Not very often. It's tough to play a good team game with weak goaltending. Although I do remember going over this before and you guys really didn't like that argument.

We got Kipper in 2013. 13 years ago. That's a decent amount of time. Think how many decent goalies other teams have had in that time span.

Goal scoring is not a problem (last night aside). Keeping the puck out of the flames net has been a problem.

I think goal scoring is a huge problem, because the bulk of it is coming on the very small back of one specific player.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say.
Flames had Kipper for 9 years, he was an elite goalie for most of that period. That's what happens when you have an elite goalie, you don't look for other goalies.
Teams like Habs (Price), Rangers (Lundqvist) etc are not looking for other goalies.

A bit of a typo for you.
we've been without Kipper for 3 years, and for his entire tenure here he was one of the best. The team did a poor job grooming/finding a replacement, but there are few (if any) goalies in the league that people would take over Kipper in his prime. So in "that timespan" we had one of the best.
It's the aftermath that hurts us, and it was always going to hurt us. We won't see a goalie like Kipper for a long time, maybe ever. People need to get used to it.
That doesn't mean we won't get a decent starter, and I'm high on Gillies, but Kipper was largely in a class of his own.

LOL Raymond shoots from anywhere no matter how good a shot it's going to be. On the PP it's about showing the defenders the threat of scoring and getting them to overcommit. Once a defender does overcommit space opens in tight and with some good passing it's tick-tack-goal. If you have a player that always shoots then the defenders will adjust positioning to block the shot knowing he won't be looking pass.

Then you'd agree that goal scoring is also a problem for the Chicago Blackhawks?
Because 49.6% of their goals have gone through Patrick Kane.

I was at the game. The NG fans were constantly berating their team and how poorly they were playing. There were even a bunch of comments like "Oh my god, do you see how easily the Flames break out of their zone? That's how you're supposed to do it..."
We laughed quite a bit at the free entertainment their fans were spewing for most of the game. When they scored to tie it up it all changed and they were doing great, "finally got rewarded"... For what? I have no idea...

Not really your point, but Patrick Kane is on pace for a 118 point season. That's huge for the NHL, when last year the scoring winner barely broke PPG.
The last players with numbers like that were Crosby and Ovechkin and you could find similar team goal % based on just those players. Basically it's generational to do that.
