Any offensive chance was either weak (Jooris versus 3 defenders for a long shot) or high and wide. They kept up with some measure of a forecheck with the Oiler's repeatedly turning it over like they were trying to evenly cook a spit roast but again Talbot makes key and huge saves.

That's what happened.
Calgary had the better chances but the Oilers goalie was the best goalie in the game.
Calgary knows how to play Edmonton by collapsing around the net in the defensive zone. It just happens that an Edmonton defender scored his first of the year.
Otherwise Calgary wins 1-0.
Stuff happens.

Yep. The shot totals were deceiving because Edmonton had very few - if any - prime scoring chances from in tight. Everything was from the outside. They are such a poorly constructed team.
Talbot was playing way out of his skin. It happens.
The Oil won one shoot-out victory vs. Calgary in their last eight games at Rexall. That speaks for itself.
Also, was it just me or was Monahan thrown out of the dot on just about every faceoff he went to take? Was so often it was weird.

For whatever reason, he's lost his mojo and IMO that's why the Flames PP is as horrible as it is.

I have zero problem with Wideman on the PP. I agree that's why he's here, 5-6 dman and PP quarterback. That doesn't mean the only play has to get it to him and shoot. He's got a good shot but so do the other 4 guys on the ice. Gaudreau is one of the best in tight. Monahan has fast release from the slot. Gio can rip it. Brodie is Brodie. Hamilton has power and can control the puck down low. Bennett drives to the middle. There is high end talent on this team, we should not have a terrible power play and we should not have a one-look play to our depth defenseman like it's 2012 Tanguay to Iginla. Every damn time.

Hamilton sure has hands of molasses sometimes, though. Doesn't seem able to make the quickest plays on the PP and pucks bounce off his stick cause it's like he's not quite ready to recieve them. Has difficulty holding the line compared to other guys as well. Still, he's got a decent shot and doesn't seem afraid to use it.

You know it's a boring game when I fall asleep before the 3rd even starts. Awful, just awful after the 1st.
And I agree that I'm pretty much done with Gelinas. His responsibility is the forward group and the power play, no? Those are the two sore spots on this team at the moment. Despite Gaudreau's good play, nobody has really played up to expectations in the forward ranks. Don't even get me started on the power play. I don't think I've ever seen a less effective man advantage and I watched Sutter coached power plays.
Gelinas is the least experienced of the coaches, and it's really starting to show. If there isn't some improvement in his areas of control by season's end, you have to let him go.

Ya why don't they set up an umbrella with Gio on one side and Wideman on the other, and just blast away. The current system is clearly not working try something new.

That's exactly the kind of game that makes the widely used advanced stats look like a clown show. Huge shot disparity but I think Calgary had way more quality chances and it looked like a relatively easy, if close win until backlund got his ass handed to him in the dot and a flukely shot floated in

Yup I agree. I'm also fine with Wideman on the PP, but again the problem of coaching rears it's ugly head. The Flames biggest issue, other then the goaltending and GAA at the start of the season, has been the coaches' inability to adjust mid-game. The atrocious PP is proof of that.

The Flames were the much better team in the first and let their foot off the gas. This has been pretty consistent with the flames this season, consistently inconsistent especially
In the second period.
Taylor Hall made from my count four egregious turnovers.
Bennett Frolik Backlund line was the best for the Flames.

First time this year that the team let Hiller down in my estimation. Still got a loser point though to stay at least 2 points ahead of the Oilers. This road trip isn't off to the best start.

Too much hanging back protecting the lead, reminded me of the Sutter and Playfair days of playing defense and losing.

Thank you for another loss Hartley and co. It must be hard to be so useless at coaching. Like what do these guys do when they practice that "powerplay"?

Surprised they couldn't get up for the Oilers. The work ethic and third period never say die attitude is totally gone this year. They seem to be content to wait around until someone else takes the game on thier stick which seems to always be Gaudreau or recently Bennett. We need more than one player a game to kick it into high gear.

What a frusrating game.
How many face offs was Monahan tossed out of? Seems like every one almost.
And Johnny was shooting almost every puck into the defenders skates.
Just a bad game.

Hate shootouts. Always have.
What a cheap way to end a hockey game.
