4-4.5 would probably be closer per season to being realistic for Campbell. A 3/13.5 would probably be what he would sign for. Might go as high as 3/15.

For those talking Campbell, let me give you my two cents as I watch him a lot.

He's still pretty mobile, but he's nowhere near as fast as he was. He's slowing down for sure. He can still read the ice really, really well, but his accuracy with passing and shooting is falling off. He's almost exclusively a "pass" guy now...rarely shoots. He's always been soft, but he still can play his own zone effectively if he has a physical and large partner. He's been around for a long time. Lots of miles on that body. Not sure how much he has left in the tank.

Basically, he'd be an ok player for 1-2 years, but he's really slowing down now, and I have a feeling he'll be a borderline NHLer in another year or so. If you sign him, I would honestly only do it for 1 year, and no more than 3 million.

Only way it makes sense is if Wideman or Smid goes the other way. Flames need to send a player with equal term back and Russell is a UFA so he shouldn't be traded for a underperforming guy making north of $3M

Well he is one of the top young players available via trade per Lyle Richardson aka Spectors Hockey.

Confirmation from tsn Ottawa play by play guy that we have interest in Cowen. Would add size and snarl to blueline, although as others have mentioned concerns over hockey iq.

@AJonSports: Yep. They're interested. Whether they can get a deal done is another story. https://t.co/U8mIWQVODd

Trade Russell and Wideman (retain 50%) and gain a few 2nd and 3rd round picks, ship a later round pick to Ottawa for Cowen. I'd be happy enough with that.

If Cowen is a target, something definitely needs to be shipped out, but could the Flames consider bringing in someone like Robin Regehr on a special assignment to coach/mentor someone like that? I don't know a lot about Cowen, but he seems to play in the same vein as Regehr did, perhaps without the IQ though.

To me Wideman for Cowen makes a lot of sense for the Flames and I think the Sens as well. For Calgary they get rid of the Wideman cap hit and add a youngish big body LHD. It would free them up to trade Russell for picks and fill his spot. The bottom 3 D would then be Smid, Engellend, and Nakladal.

For Ottawa they get a very good offensive Dman who typically plays better all around hockey when he gets over 20min a game. Wideman would be in the Ottawa top 4.

Perhaps a Chiasson-Colborne swap in the deal would also work?

I liked Cowen when he was drafted but now he seems close to being more of a Matt Pelech 2.0 type player. couldn't transition to the pro level and ends up as a b-level enforcer going to europe.

Im just happy to see none of these rumours involving Calgary's picks in the first two rounds.

Im not keen on Cowan. Im not seeing the Benefit.

If it's Wideman for Cowan that's okay. We savage significant cap space for the upcoming offseason.

I could see him being a long term #6 option.

So, kind of like a less capable Smid.

He has no hockey sense. Leave him in Ottawa.

I'd take cowen if it meant getting rid of smid and Raymond. I think cowen could be a decent guy if coached properly, if Reggie becomes a special defence coach he might be able to make our guys mean.

While sucking all the offence out of them. Keep Regehr away from our D thank you very much.

Yeah, what? Do you know how coaching works. Most coaches don't only coach what they played. Pretty sure Jaques Cloutier isn't a goalie coach on the Flames.

Is Regehr really joining the organization in some capacity? If so, I think we pretty much have to stop making fun of the Oilers' strategy of filling their hockey ops/coaching staff with former players.
