Dougie has played 218 NHL games, I don't think he counts as a prospect any longer. He's an NHL player, full stop.

Right now Stamkos is a better hockey player than Monahan (his struggles after coming back from injury aside), but by the time the Flames are actually contenders in 2-3 years, Stamkos will be past his prime while Monahan will just be entering it.
Hamilton, is a top pairing D-man now on most teams, with even more potential to get better over the next 2-3 years, for a former first rounder that has had trouble cracking an NHL lineup after a few years trying (even a deep one), is ludicrous.
Interested to see if people think I have the homer glasses firmly attached here or not.
|
I think there's a fair amount of homerism going on here.
Stamkos is 25 and to say he will be past his prime is 2-3 years seems a little ridiculous. Most established stars in the league maintain their level of play until their early to mid-30s. That's another ~10 seasons of strong play from him. Stamkos is the better player today, will likely be the better player in 2-3 years, and will likely even be the better player in 5 years. And this doesn't mean that Monahan will be bad. The reason not to make the trade is because you will likely have to pay Stamkos +$10M/year whereas we can hopefully get Monahan locked in around $5.5M/year and spend that extra $4.5M on another valuable roster piece.
As for Dougie Hamilton, he's far more established than Drouin and would be an overpay. He's not a top pairing D on a solid team now though...but he has potential to turn into one.

Yeah, I can't see how realistically we're in the mix for this. Assuming that list of teams is correct, I'm glad that Treliving is continuing his communication with Yzerman, but I don't think we'll match what Tampa wants. Namely one of our three young stud forwards or our best 3 defensemen or this year's first. Rightfully so too. Lets not smash a new hole to fill another.

I think Drouin has a tonne of potential and the idea of getting him is exciting, but I don't think we can make a realistic offer without straining our assets. There are probably 4 or 5 teams in the West that could make a fair offer and not even blink. For us, we would really be putting all our eggs into one basket.
(Assuming of course that none of Brodie, Monahan, Gaudreau or Bennett are involved).
I am thinking it would cost us a 1st rounder and one of our top prospects. At least. At that price, Drouin better pan out.

I don't think Treliving sleeps. We've been in the mix for Panarin, Stamkos (in the summer), Kessel, Myers, and finally Dougie.

If we don't get Drouin, who is on your trade wishlist (in order)?

I guess that is true. Reading more about Minnesota being interested as well. These teams have the quality assets that they may be more willing to move and could afford to move them without blinking as you said because of where their team is at.
but in some signings/trade, Treliving has shown he can be a wizard.

This is the way I think of it...
If Drouin was happy, and team x just decided to ask Yzerman, what would it take to get Drouin, Yzerman is in the driver's seat for sure. He doesn't need to move him, or maybe even want to, and he will be able to get MAXIMUM value for Drouin in trade (10/10 for his value) because he just doesn't have to do anything unless his socks are blown off.
If Drouin wants out, and everyone knows it, Yzerman doesn't have the same "don't have to do anything" leverage. He's not in the driver's seat as internal pressures are going to force his hand in the end. His only saving grace is that multiple teams want in, but in the end, he still has internal pressure to make a deal, and likely before the perfect one appears. Say he gets 7.5/10 of Drouin's MAX value.
Where is really sucks is if Drouin wants out, everyone knows it, and only 1 or 2 teams are pursuing him. Same as above, but not as much interest and cross-bidding. In this case you will be lucky to get 5/10 of Drouin's value as not everybody is lining up, and those internal pressures to move him still exist.
Don't get stuck on 7.5/10 or 5/10 (I'm just throwing numbers out there), but the point is, as soon as the player wants out, it will net you less.
Someone brought up Johansen/Jones a few posts up. If there were no known issues/problems with Johansen, it is conceivable that it would have taken a pick on top of Jones to get the job done (Johansen is more proven than Jones).
Anyway, that's how I look at it.

I'd say Hayes, Drouin, Hamonic, Rychel...then a goaltender.

1. Rychel
2. Bernier/Andersen/Howard/whoever is available. I sensed a ton of butt puckering yesterday when Ramo got shot in the collarbone with a puck. There's absolutely zero confidence from anyone surrounding the Flames in Hiller. The 2nd goalie needs to be addressed.
3. Rattie (It's super weird seeing the "Bust" moniker being thrown at this guy. He's having a great season in the AHL and is the 1st call up for STL it appears. If he is available, I'd love to see him in CGY)
4. Hayes, big LH shot RW. Johnny and Arnolds college line mate. Could be cheap given his situation in NY.

If the Ducks put Ritchie in the deal that will be impossible for the Flames to match without giving up one of the untouchables.

Yeah, we have really good prospect depth these days, but other than the recently graduated guys that can't be moved without opening holes, we lack the blue chippers that Tampa probably wants in return.
I would love to see Treliving work some magic though.

I would be hesitant to commit to a long term keeper. After this season they are going to clamp down big time on equipment. I would let the dust clear after a full season of new equipment and assess goaltenders then.

I don't think I'd sign a goalie long term but if we could get a decent goalie on a decent contract through trade, it'd be good. If we sign any goalies as UFA's then it'd better be shorter term and good dollars.

I agree with you. Even a Bernier trade where his value sucks might be a good idea. Get a year to test him out. Not like we will be a contender next year either barring some crazy unforseen deals.

For me the 1st round pick has to be on the table. I would protect it for top 5 but I wonder if a Hudler + 1st + D prospect gets it done?
I have no problem with 1st round picks being used to add players like Hamilton or Drouin. Drouin would join a core that consists of Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Hamilton, and Brodie all 19-25.

Drouin and Hamilton are not the same calibre of player. Drouin is in the AHL, Hamilton was a top pairing defenceman with 3 NHL seasons played before the trade.
Drouin could certainly become a great player, but he could also bust, like plenty of smallish skilled wingers have in the past, and will in the future.
