Thinking of Luke Schenn just makes me sad about the 2007 entry draft. They finished dead last in the league with 50 some points. They seemed destined to win the lottery and draft Patrick Kane #1. Instead they draft van Riemsdyk #2 ... who in turn got traded for Luke Schenn ... who has now become Weal.

#LAKings made it clear they couldn't do deal unless Vinny agreed to retire after the season, not with Kopitar extension & poss. Lucic deal.

Well drafting JVR at #2 overall wasn't that bad frankly, I've seen much worse picks. He still looks pretty good and has the potential to be very good. I'd say his value is pretty high.
But yeah that JVR for Luke Schenn deal was bad, bad, bad.

No fail. That's how it works. Players on LTIR still count against the cap, but you are allowed to exceed the cap by an equivalent amount to pay their replacements.

So essentially this is a huge favor for Philly?
I can't believe LA was that desperate for Luke Schenn, a bottom pairing guy. Doesn't make sense.

So with the TB buyout, the trade today with retained salary, seems like VL is getting paid by three different teams.

And if he winds up a healthy scratch in L.A., all three teams will be paying him not to play for them.

Seen that 64% of fans on Sportsnet voted the Kings won the trade. Those Leaf fans sure are sharp

Cap space, a middling prospect, and a draft pick are far more valuable than anything Lecavalier or Schenn can provide, even in the short term.
Hextall for GM of the year?

From what I can tell he has a NMC so he would be in the pressbox at worst.

But he is retiring at the end of the year right?
If LeCavalier has negative trade value then Philly should be keeping him so they get a bigger return for Schenn no?

He would rather try and make an impact on another team and promise to give up millions of dollars rather than just sit in the pressbox for the Flyers.
He wouldn't be a bad person to make Philly pay the rest of the contract, but it shows something that he would rather contribute than just sit around and do nothing.
Granted he has made a lot of money already. No trade, Philly is on the hook next year.

He is only retiring to facilitate the trade.

LA is potentially handcuffing themselves here. I can see why they added the players - big bodied depth guys. They just put themselves into serious cap issues for nothing more than depth, and eliminated the possibility of putting together a better trade for a cup run.
One thing about this trade that will be curious is if Sutter can really make an impact on Schenn. The guy had a heck of a lot of promise (though I still think he got drafted too high even with that promise), but went to a dysfunctional Leafs team. He gets traded to a dysfunctional Flyers team. LA is anything but dysfunctional at the moment. Sutter has a good track record at getting guys to buy-in, and an even better record with making defencemen good.
I still think this was an unnecessary trade for LA, but I am also pissed about confirming that Lecavalier is retiring before pulling the trigger. They really do deserve a decade-long jinx.
