I understand Schenn to an extent but taking Vinny is just a favor to Hextall as far as I'm concerned. His negative value should've made the deal something like this:

Schenn+Lecavalier for 7th

Why not just trade for Schenn?

Lombardi: 'we see a lot of Matt Greene in Luke'

Helene Elliott @helenenothelen
Lombardi also said Greene out for the year.

Cause Hextall recognized LA really wanted Schenn bad and forced them to take Lecavalier. That is good GMing there.

I think he has an NMC

Exactly... the way I see it the Kings just traded a 3rd + Weal + Cap Space for the rest of the year in exchange for guys I wouldn't put out on the ice. That Philly managed to get (rather then have to give) a miracle to offload even half those contracts is a miracle.

Remember they don't have much real "currency" to give up for any trade deadline deals anyways. They traded away their 2016 1st for Sekera, 2015 1st for Lucic, and their prospect pool is bled dry from other trades (Roland McKeown, Hudson Fasching, and Colin Miller).

And Schenn is the depth, Vinny is just a throw-in.

I do think Philly won the trade, though.

Well it's fair to say Philly won this. Actually I've been pretty impressed with Hextall since he got the gig. He's doing a great job cleaning up after Holmgren destroyed the team. The only thing I didn't like was the Voracek deal but it was probably either that or he goes to UFA.

Is there a player with such a divergent perceived value between NHL executives and fans than Luke Schenn?

Exactly. Because he does have the tools.

And if LA can turn him into a useful defenseman, then they have done well.

If not...

It is stunning to think that Lecavalier's old contract (11 years, $85 million and bought out by the Lightning in the summer of 2013) would have paid him $10 million this year!!

I don't know that I can say who won this deal until we see what Schenn and Lecavalier look like as part of the Kings machine... playing on that team can absolutely buttress some major flaws and make otherwise useless players into contributors.

according to capfriendly:

LA is over the line by 1.8mill. Philly now has some room to do things at 4.1mill.

I BELIEVE if I'm not mistaken you are allowed to go over the cap X dollars. BUT you take a cap hit penalty next season for doing so.

LA is 600K under the cap when you take into count the LTIR.

As per hockeyscap.com

They are over because of LTIR. It won't go onto next year.

The only cap hit allowed to roll over to next season is bonus overages.

The NHL will not approve any trade if it results in a team exceeding the salary cap (excluding LTIR and bonus cushion)

The extra year on his contract would likely made it a non-starter

I doubt it, that extra year is a deal breaker. I could see him traded sometime in the summer or during next season though.
