That makes no sense at all.

So Columbus trades a prototypical number one center to Nashville and picks up a very good young defenseman and then turns around and trades him to Edmonton for a puny soft number 2 though kinda decent 2 way center, who's not nearly as good or has the potential of the center that they just traded away.

That's just silly talk and any Oiler who believes that RNH would fetch them jones without a pretty big ad is delusional.

This was the chance for the Oilers to try to balance their lineup and they didn't make a bold move.

figures.

Interesting to see if Wennberg/Karlsson will step up for the Jackets. Good trade for both sides.

I agree, but mainly because even without Jones, Nashville's D is still top 3. Now they have a true #1 center and they didn't have to make their team worse to do it. Didn't even have to touch prospects or picks either.

Columbus did as well as could have expected given the circumstances. It's better this than a quality for quantity swap, of which I'm sure they had many offers. I doubt there were other offers for players better the Jones in a straight swap.

I was thinking for a moment that I want us to be involved in trades like this

Then I remembered Dougie Hamilton wears our jersey.

Then I chuckled.

Looks like GMs are gradually smartening up to the idea of not waiting for the deadline and do sensible trades when they actually make sense and can be done without rushing.

Kinda hope this would trigger more trades across the league now.

I hope this makes for a dead Trade Deadline day, which is the funniest possible outcome on TSN.

Come again? Columbus has scored 103, which is middle of the pack in the league. Johansen had contributed just 6 of those. They even got by with him being a healthy scratch. I don't see him being traded as having a massive impact on their offence, they've found a way to score without him anyway.

But they've improved their blue line significantly, a massive need seeing how they've let in the most goals this year. I would argue that this trade improves both teams right away, so as long as Johansen picks up where he left off from the last 2 seasons.

I'd say it was an even trade leaning slightly towards a Columbus win. Not sure how they lose.

Good trade as it addresses needs for both teams and the two players involved are of both high quality. It will be interesting in time to see if one team comes out a clear winner.

Because a #1 C is generally acquired in the top 5 picks of the draft, somewhere the Predators usually don't pick from. Meanwhile they seem to have a steady stream of top pairing defensemen falling into their laps every few years.

I don't really know if these trades trigger a small arms race or not. I mean the Central is trucking along and MIN and NSH have a grip on the wildcards. I don't know what Minneota can do to buff their team up to maybe keep NSH at bay if Johansen clicks off right away.

I can see the Pacific teams start pushing maybe. But with the draft looking the way t does maybe all the teams outside of L.A just stand pat and let it all play out. I just don't know.

I can't really decide who I think won, so that probably means it's a fair trade.

Long term it is probably Columbus though but at the same time Nashville turned in a 2nd pairing dman (on their team) into a top line center, so that makes them much better.

Forwards tend to top out younger then d-men, and Jones is 3 years younger then Johansen, so slight edge from that perspective.

Makes sense for Nashville though with the players they have on the backend already.

Good ole fashioned hockey trade.

Nashville won the trade, but Columbus was never going to win because they had to trade Johansen

loving this, it really is a fantastic trade as a whole. Player for player, forward for defenseman and makes perfect sense for either side. Too bad we don't see deals like that more often.

The trade addresses needs on both sides - so it's a good trade in that sense.

I think Jones is/will be the better hockey player, so for me, Columbus wins it. And it could turn out that he becomes significantly better, but we'll see.

I wonder if not doing any trades during a year automatically reflects negatively on a GM and would get him fired. I doubt there are ready-to-view stats on this, but I would be curious to know which NHL team holds the record for the lowest number of trades in one full season and which GM was it under, say since 2000.

Awesome trade, pretty even since both players are top young talent in their respective positions and have a long career ahead of them. I'm also very happy neither player came to the Pacific, especially to the losers north of us

Nashville wins the trade, but Columbus did well with what they had to do.

I'm just not sold on Jones, but the next couple months playing in Columbus will be telling to see which way he's trending.
