Pretty much the dumbest thing I've heard. But I guess the NHL asked for it when they open it up to fans. Game is a joke yes, but this is straight up trolling. Can't believe the NHL would honor it.
There would be much more negative press directed towards the NHL if they didn't honour it. They made the smart call - and you'd better believe that the Fan Vote will return, if at all, heavily altered next year.
I'm actually surprised the NHL honoured it. There are many that believe the NHL straight up rigged the final result in the the Rory Fitzgerald campaign. I was expecting them to do the same here.
The league has likely already talked to Scott over the past weeks and negotiated something. Especially since he's not even in the NHL currently.
Could be the deal is that they'll honor the fans vote and not do any funny business with the numbers, and give him his due credit by being formally announced as he is/was today, as captain.
In turn, in the next few days, he comes out and graciously appreciates the fan support, but also graciously declines, and the league gives him another role in the game (bench reporter, color commentary or something).
That way he gets his "fame"(not that he was looking for it), the fans get their voices heard, and the league gets a regular group of players for the Pacific division.

The NHL management deserves to have egg on their face with this Scott nonsense. They have had several opportunities to restrict who is available to chose from. It shouldn't be a free for all vote for anyone on the roster. It should be based on top point earners period. Especially forwards. Just like for goalies it should be only the top 10 statistical goalies can even be voted for.
Allstar games used to be the best of the very best.
The NHL has embarrassed themselves and i can say will full confidence they won't change the selection process one bit for 2017.

This isn't about what fans want as much as its just a giant troll job, Scott and the NHL should be embarrassed by this, especially the NHL for letting it get to this point. It is no longer an all-star game when fans get to troll the NHL, and the NHL goes DERP.

Could not a preliminary process of selection, say by the hockey writers that vote on certain awards, avoid a lot of this controversy? A writers' consensus on the top 5-10 players eligible from each team to be elected into the fan vote pool?
This way, you would have input from an objective (but just subjective enough) group of professionals that see these players on a consistent basis and know who should be eligible for all-star consideration.

Even if it's a troll job, how can you say that it isn't what the fans want?
I'd love to see John Scott score on a line with Gaudreau and Sedin, to be honest.

you mean the same people who vote on the Selke trophy but are uninterested in watching games outside the eastern timezone?
forget it.

The Arizona Coyotes enforcer who was picked by a groundswell fan movement wants to go to the game so his family can experience the fun of watching him play with the NHL’s best.
“That was a big reason why I do think I should go and want to go to participate in this, my family my kids I think, it’ll be a fun time to go out there and experience something I never would have dreamed of to experience,” Scott said. “It’ll be a fun time.”
It's a joke because players like Scott get voted in. Back in the day players we're proud to be nominated and to participate in the All Star game. Now, they could care less because the fans continue to vote in guys like Scott and think it's funny yet fail to see it tarnishes the reputation of the game. The All Star game in every league is to showcase the best players the league has to offer and this year we get to see John Scott. Yay.
You really think that? All-Star games in every league are about jacking around for a weekend.

A trophy that regularly goes to players in the Western Conference? Sure.
Writers from each team/city could get together with their peers and come to a consensus on a set number of players from each team to nominate to the fan voting pool.
That way, you would have professionals that are close to each team nominating truly qualified players. A centralized committee may not see how truly worthy a TJ Brodie is, but a collection of writers (Duhatschek, Dowbiggen, Francis, etc.) that follow them day by day would.
You not only get the big names getting recognition (Gio, Johnny), but also the unsung heroes who deserve a nod.
It's extremely unlikely that a Scott, Fitzpatrick, or Girgensons make that exclusive list, and thus are not even in the conversation at this time of year.

If John Scott in the all-star game has you this upset, then you are simply too sensitive to enjoy anything Jay, so I can't say I'm too worried about your feels.
I'm not upset. I'm disappointed that this happened the first time (and possibly only time) that the league does this 3-on-3 thing. So I'm going to do something else that day, and I doubt I'll be the only one.

Also, don't be a hypocrite. As I've said, my enjoyment of the event will be enhanced if Scott goes. But you're sitting there whining without any care of "anybody else's enjoyment of the event" yourself. Rather, you're trying to make it all about yourself.
It's not all about me. It's about people who want to watch entertaining hockey, as opposed to people who want to pull a dumb prank on the NHL. If I wanted dumb Internet pranks, I'd be on 4chan. If you want to pull dumb pranks, you can do that anywhere.

Meh, the All Star game gets more irrelevant every year.
My suggestion is to scrap the game all together and replace it with two weeks off every two years, once for the Olympics and once for a World Cup. International Hockey >>>> All star games.
Writers from each team/city could get together with their peers and come to a consensus on a set number of players from each team to nominate to the fan voting pool.
Why? I mean... if you're not going to let the fans vote on who get's in just don't let the fans vote on who get's in. Why put up some pretense about it?
The All-Star game sucks, it's a meaningless hockey game with zero stakes that no one takes seriously because it's not serious... why should the method of selecting some of them be any any less dumb then the game itself.
1. When a team loses a "good way", we'll give them credit for half a win (no problem)
2. To decide multi-hour full tilt games, league will use a ridiculous gimmick individual skills competition that has nothing to do with a regular hockey game. (no problem)
3. Since that wasn't stupid enough, league will double down and add a second 3 on 3 gimmick to decide games, I mean to decide who will get credit for a win and who will get credit for half a win. (no problem)
4. Everybody will rave about how great and exciting 3 on 3 is, while failing to point out that the reason it seems that way is that the 60 minutes that preceded it are generally so dull and boring. (no problem)
5. League will pretend to care about head injuries, but tolerate and mildly encourage two huge athletes to pummel each other in the head because it's "part of the fibre of the game". (no problem)
6. League will have an annual all-star game that nobody really cares about and play it in a way that has absolutely nothing to do with the style of any other game in the history of ever because a final score of 15-13 isn't a farce at all. But it doesn't matter because nobody could actually sit through the full 60 minutes of it anyway. (no problem).
7. Deciding that the showcase all-star "game" won't really be a "game" at all and instead be a contrived 4 team tournament that has nothing to do with anything (no problem)
8. For years and years, league will announce the rosters for the all-star game and you'd need to form an expedition to find a press release that draws any interest or brings publicity to the league. (no problem)
9. Because people vote for it, an irrelevant John Scott will be take 1 whole spot out of 50 guys and be an honorary captain for 3 hours at one meaningless game. Oops, I forgot, it's not even a game.
BOYCOTT!!!!!!!! FARCE!!!!!!!! THEY'RE RUINING THE INTEGRITY OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!!

Has anyone actually argued that this vote is ruining the integrity of the game? Or is that the convenient straw-man the trolls that voted for Scott are trotting out? It is a dumb troll job, plain and simple. Nothing to like or appreciate.

Is there a dollar amount we can attribute to it? Why do they do it? Does any other sport do this? If I've learned anything through University its that you should never allow the masses to decide anything trivial. They will surprise you. Not in a good way.
Secondly, who cares? Let John Scott play. Its going to be awesome for him and his family and its the All-Star Game, its not like the Cup is on the line or anything. There is literally nothing at stake. This is about as harmless as it gets so long as John can stand people laughing at him if he cant take passes from superstars or something.
Personally, I like it. Some of the best characters and personalities in the league are enforcers. I wish McGrattan had been elected an NHL All-Star Game Captain. That would have been awesomesauce.
