has it already been mentioned how the Empire's tendency to arrest heroes when they are vulnerable rather than just shooting them causes their downfall time and time again? I was reminded of it while watching RoTJ and the troopers for whatever reason try to take Han and Leia prisoner while they're opening the base door. literally 5 seconds before that they were blasting at each other furiously, and now suddenly the bad guys wanna show mercy? if they just did their jobs, the whole Rebellion gets crushed easily.
I'm sure there's many more examples throughout the movies, and they do it again right after Finn's battle with Tonfa Trooper. it's not like stormtroopers have any sort of moral compass outside of Finn, as evidenced by their slaughter of the Jakku village. if you want to actually win this time then show some freaking ruthlessness...hey First Order: clean it up.
Read through some of this thread but was there any discussion on the old timer that gave Poe the map? Was right at the very start.
Not much. Just that Max von Sydow is a good Jedi name.
My hope for von Sydow's character (prior to seeing the movie) being Boba Fett obviously wasn't true. I think all that is known is that he was close to Princess Leia and has been around a long time.

Von Sydow is also 7 inches taller than the actor who played Fett in the originals. So unless his time in the Sarlacc stretched him like a torture rack...

Nobody said Sarlacc pits were fun.
On that complaint, the one thing that keeps stirring inside me about the movie that I didn't really like was that scene where Han / Chewie / Rey / Fin / gang members are chasing each other around and running from the creatures that Han captured. Seemed like more of an Indiana Jones kind of scenario that was misplaced - and I bet that that's where Harrison Ford and JJ Abrams got themselves injured.
From the Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary: More Colons: Thanks
Spoiler!
As the empire toppled, retreating Imperial officials destroyed records that would have been vital to the New Republic’s attempts at Galactic reconstruction. New Republic bureaucrats turned instead to firsthand accounts from well-traveled locals to fill in the gaps. A seasoned traveler and explorer of the more remote fringes of the galaxy, Lor San Tekka has proven his worth to the New Republic and Resistance many times over. Ready to retire after decades of exploration and adventure, the spiritual San Tekka has settled with a colony of villagers in the remote Kelvin Ravine on the frontier world of Jakku.
A legendary traveler and explorer, Lor San Tekka is a longtime ally of the New Republic and the Resistance. After the Battle of Endor, San Tekka helped Luke Skywalker recover secret Jedi lore that the Empire had tried to erase, and Leia Organa hopes the old scout can now help find her brother. Following decades of adventure, San Tekka retired to live simply on Jakku, where he follows the dictates of the once-forbidden Church of the Force. But his retirement is fated to be anything but peaceful.
Hopefully he's Kanan from Rebels:

I wish JJ was making it too!! Why fix what ain't broke is my question to Disney. Abrams should do all 3.
The director for EP 8 is the same guy that directed Looper, which was fantastic. He also directed the Ozymandias episode of Breaking Bad, widely considered to be the best of the entire series. I'm very excited to see what he's able to do with Star Wars

Eh, I was pretty high on Abrams with Star Trek after his first reboot. Into Darkness... not so much. We don't want a point for point Empire Strikes Back remake here.
I can take one by-the-numbers Star wars, but three would be a bit much.
I agree with this. JJ was the right guy for 7 because he gets how to do fan service while updating the universe with some room to be in. I don't think having him do the second one would add much value.
He put the old pieces in the right places to make new movies about new people going forward. In the wrong hands the new trilogy becomes about 3 senior citizens.
