Nah, I mean, it was an ok movie. There was nothing original or interesting about it. It was just fun Christmas eye candy. There were some good characters. I am glad there were because without decent casting this movie would have been awful.

My post was meant to be facetious, but it did come across a little brash; sorry about that.
I agree with your points, but like a couple guys already said, star wars needed a reset. Fans needed something comfortable to get acclimatized to after 30 years of waiting. I fully expect ep 8 & 9 to be a completely new story line. I was a little annoyed that the plot of TFA was to destroy another death star (oh wait, it's not a deathstar at all, it's way bigger than a measly ol deathstar), but I can forgive them. I won't get hung up on that.
Reading a bunch of online stuff, looks like Star Wars Rebels is a good source of backgruond info. I plan on getting into that at some point.

ridiculous that these items were not addressed - it will likely mean that i only watch this movie 4 times maximum

Our planet has space travel and robots that will do your household chores, but there are still lots of people living in huts.

I actually really liked the whole Jakku bit, and I was kind of hoping that it was going to set the tone of the movie. As in, both sides have relentlessly smashed themselves against each other decades, only achieving pyrrhic victories, at a huge cost to the galactic economy, and political stability. Places like Jakku would be the norm, not the exception.

This scene actually cracked me up instead of having the intended effect. He clearly can sense she's coming, but makes her climb all those stairs (I guess he's just standing there meditating or whatever Jedi do all day before she arrives), then stand there and hold the lightsabre out to him for what feels like five minutes while the camera pulls away in a 360 and Luke says absolutely nothing. I get that they're going for anticipation obviously, but it felt awkward. I'm guessing when more of the backstory is revealed in later movies that scene will have more meaning, but for now, not so much.

He was probably in his hut doing Jedi stuff. Then he heard the goddamn Milenium Falcon (VRMMMMSHOOOSH BWHAOOOWOOOOOOPPPPRRRRrrrrrr) and probably left his hut, and waited for whoever was coming. I'm sure seeing the MF let him know it was someone on his team.

Background info for what? Rebels takes place between Episodes III & IV and shows the early days of the Rebellion. It doesn't have anything to do with the new movies.

Some things that I would like to see in Star Wars going forward, based on my first watching of the Force Awakens.
1) A throwaway line something along the line of "midi-clorians are not bred into the Jedi, they are attracted to the Jedi".
2) The Jedi never outlawed romance, only for their members working as 'Judges of the Universe'. I mean, come on. If the assumption from the prequels is true, the Sith's biggest draw for new members would be the daily giant orgies. Or going on a date.
3) Both of these can be cleaned up in 30 seconds of throwaway "Luke Speak".
4) Rey discovers how strong, and crappy, she is at force wielding, and the only reason that she survived was that the Sith didn't want to hurt her at all.
5) All of the old characters except for Luke are pushed to the back. Yes, even R2.
6) Director #2 looks like a solid choice. Still time to change their mind on #3. Jurassic world was a fun romp with lots of holes. Star Wars can't afford a Star : Trek Into Darkness horrible writing team, or director that can't identify that it's horrible. It's Star Wars.
7) A sense of scope that the Republic was just essentially wiped out.
8) No more battle stations.
9) More cloak and dagger.
10) Brilliant new core of characters. Flesh them out. Let them act.
My impressions of the movie. They gave the fans exactly what they wanted, and did it well. JJ Abrams is a savant at mimicking the style of other directors, and not seeming forced. Great choice for director #1. Now don't cater to the fans going forward. Give them the Batman quote thing. The best compliment that I can give is that I may never watch the prequels again.

Well I just read that Rebels had good background info since it's considered canon if I'm not mistaken. Don't kill the messenger man. I'm not an uber nerd yet

Yes, it is considered canon. It shows the early days of the Rebellion and deals with the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
From your post, it seemed like you were going to watch it for background information about The Force Awakens. If that's your goal, you'll be disappointed.

Actually, my guess is that Rebels will lead very seamlessly into Rogue One. We may see Kanan, Ezra, Ashoka etc. in a live action movie and involved in the finding of the Death Star plans.
If that is not in the works, it should be.

I don't think there were that many Jedi kicking around so close to the events of A New Hope, although I suppose Lucas could have opened the door by showing the early plans for the 1st Death Star in the last(?) prequel.

It also just had the largest Monday in box office history, brought in another $40 million.
Gonna have huge legs over the holidays too, I know tons of people that are waiting for the fervour to die down a bit before they head to it.

It also apparently just leaked online, might hit ticket sales a bit.

Feels like one of those movies it might not impact that much.
Has that "blockbuster" feel that makes people want to see it on big screen in a theatre.

Can anyone find a hi-res photo of Luke in the ending scene? God, he looks so bad ass there I want it as a desktop or phone background.

So this was posted in the non-spoiler thread which is either someone being a jerk or hilarious. In that the main criticism is that it is an homage to a new hope. Funny either way.
