Default *SPOILER DISCUSSION* Star Wars The Force Awakens *POST HERE AFTER SEEING THE ...

To those questioning the female Jedi angle, how awesome would you feel taking your young daughter to that movie?

I personally love it. I don't have kids, but all I could think of leaving is how cool that must have been for the parents taking their young girls to the movie. It's fairly rare to have strong female role models that don't rely on their sexuality for power.

It's equally cool for young boys to be exposed to women who are generally badass and portray their worth outside of T&A.

This isn't about being PC at all. It's about healthy gender roles being portrayed in a blockbuster film. It's ####ing awesome.

I liked it, but thought R2-D2 was the biggest scumbag in the movie. Gets depressed and goes into a low-power state because Luke isn't around, doesn't share the rest of the map to Skywalker's hiding spot with the Resistance. This decision cost the life of the legendary Han Solo and the lives of hundreds of Resistance fighters, all because he was feeling emo.

Also, the other scumbag award goes to the First Order. How do you have the map to Skywalker (minus the part that BB-8 had), and not just use your dumb ships to go map out that missing section of the map yourself? What is this, amateur hour? Clean it up, First Order.

I think having a strong female lead role is a non-issue. People whining about it are out to lunch. Yoda wasn't a prototypical tough guy leader, and that was the point. I will add that my wife mentioned she is glad that Rey's costume wasn't sexualized with her boobs and buns hanging out all over the place and I agree with that. Rey is just plain badass, and the force is her ally.

Saw it for the second time last night. Going for a third time tonight.

Rey could be my new favourite character. I don't believe she's Luke's daughter though, nor is she Han and Leia's daughter. I think Luke knows her but is not related to her. I don't know why anyone would want her to not be the new Jedi. There have been plenty of female Jedi in the past, so that's not an issue, and throughout the movie I kept thinking about how lame of a Jedi Finn was. It was a relief to know he isn't one, and they did a good job of making it seem like he was one (although when she force pulled the lightsaber from Kylo Ren it was predictable at that point).

Kylo Ren being a whinny kid still is the whole point of his character. I loved him. He wants to be Darth Vader more than anything but knows deep inside he isn't Darth Vader. Rey even calls him on it at one point. Someone earlier in the thread said Kylo Ren had troubles with Finn, but I don't agree with that at all. He disposes of Finn pretty quickly.

Also noticed the similarities in the plot between ANH and TFA, but it didn't bother me too much. I thought the Starkiller planet/Deathstar similarity was the only stupid part but I could get over it. Don't forget this movie is trying to appeal to a new audience and a new generation of kids. I love the original trilogy to death, but I can see how today's kids wouldn't like it as it's effects are obsolete by today's standards (and most 5 year olds aren't too concerned with the actual story, I know I wasn't when The Phantom Menace came out, 5 year old me thought that was the best Star Wars movie ever).

I really liked the balance between CGI and real things. AOTC was ridiculous with CGI (all the clones are CGI??? Really???), but I think TFA did a good job of not overdoing it.

I can't wait for Episode VIII. I think the Knights of Ren will play a bigger role in the next movie, and my prediction is that by Episode IX Kylo Ren gives in to the light and helps Rey destroy Snoke and the Kights of Ren.

Han and the resistance should have hacked the #### out of R2D2 a long time ago. When that little wanker went into sad robot mode, he still had his interlink going to know when Luke was close, ergo still connected via satellite. The Resistance should have been able to get into that dumb idiot's central repository using proxychains.

You were 5 years old when Phantom Menace came out but you have a Calgary Cannons avatar?

Were they even here still when that movie came out? Impressive.

Cannons left in '02, I remember going to some games as a little kid, but it's my avatar because I used to use the Angels logo (my favourite ball team) but I changed it for the playoffs against the Ducks and have just been too lazy to change it back.

I believe the Resistance didn't know R2 had the remaining map piece.

Also (mostly to Muta) It was Luke who commanded R2 not to awaken until a specific somebody came and reveal the rest of the map to the worthy hero. That somebody being Rey in this case.

EDIT: I thought it was pretty clear during Rey's flashback scenes when Luke places his hand on R2, he is sealing the secret within until Rey's coming.

Han only ever caused R2 problems. Had he intervened earlier in the original Death Star raid he wouldn't have been shot up. Had Han provided better cover at the shield generator R2 wouldn't have been shot up. This poor droid dealt with a lot of crap because of Han's 'devil may care' attitude.

Ahh okay. Yeah I'm five years older than you and my only memory of the Cannons was the free tickets they'd give out at elementary. I was just surprised!

Ah, that scene was so fast I didn't catch that. So Luke's the scumbag then.

But BB-8 knows -- it's in the dialogue. He pulls the cover off of him, 3PO comes by and says something like "What's that? Oh no, I don't think R2 would have the rest of the map in his backup systems..." or something like that.

On another point in that scene, how did they get the gigantic schematic of the Starkiller base? Did Finn bring it with him when he escaped from the First Order? I might've missed something there.

Han banged his sister, knocked her up and left. Luke had his reasons.

She's well into her 80's now.

I don't think it was her.

Not that it was mon mothma, the nurse in TFA just looked like the actress who did mon mothma. Apparently I am wrong though.

Leia or someone else in the resistance mentioned that their scout ships had returned from scanning the base, which would have been easy to track since it left a giant laser wake of death

I had more fun watching Rey make dinner and play around with the old helmet than I did during all 3 prequels combined.

I also have no problem with her being able to pick up a few basic Jedi tricks quickly...we've all seen that stuff so it doesn't need the same really slow introduction as last time. otherwise, Kylo just stomps everyone and the first movie ends with 3 dead heroes. besides, Rey has the right bloodlines so I think she knows a little bit about the Force if that's ever a concern.
