It's usually decently easy to throw together a good costume yourself going between cheap outlets (Second hand, walmart, dollar stores, etc..)
My Solo get-up:
- $15 navy sweatpants (you may already own some!)
- $9 for an awesome toy gun that makes sweet blast noises.
- Already had black vest and white/off-white undershirt
- Duct tape/existing belt combo for gun holster
- Some fabric paint or tape if you want to put the red stripe on your pants.
My brother is being Luke Skywalker on Dagoba:
- Green wife-beater
- cargo pants
- big back pack (could be made with cardboard probably. Bonus points for putting a little yoda in there).
I find these things tend to work out better for any costume (not just nerd fests) than the pre-fab stuff that is overpriced, looks cheap and never fits. Not to mention every one has the same thing. It's basically about whether you want to spend your money or your time.
