I agree with op on almost everything....
Oilers no good check.
We are better than canucks check.
San Jose will implode in the end (the question being is it the first round of playoffs or end or regular season).
I don't agree about Arizona. They have many of the same things going for them as we did last year and I would bet them making it.
That said I think we are in the thick of things at the end and hopefully they squeak in with momentum!

Could not disagree more. Can you name me one game the Flames won this year that they didn't deserve to? Because I can name several games that they deserved to win but lost.
I think outside of the first 6 or 7 games the Flames have played well most nights.

A better question is can anyone name a game that the Flames lost that they deserved to win.
You can make a pretty good argument that a team that has 3 regulation wins and 22 points is on a pretty unbelievable streak of good luck.

Ottawa, Arizona, and Florida games come to mind.

If the Flames make the playoffs this year I will eat a 14 year old can of water chestnuts I found in the back of my parents' pantry.

So a game where where Flame were outshot, a game where they outshot the other team by 5 and then a game (Ottawa) where a team with awful goaltending got awful goaltending and lost.
The Flames just won 2 games where by any objective standard they should have lost.

And you could easily say they could have a winning record if their goaltending didn't give them ECHL quality performances in probably atleast half of their losses.

1) San Jose will crumble like creampuffs in the second half
2) Arizona is not a good team and should end up near the bottom
3) Vancouver is not better than us and by game 50 it will be proven
4) Edmonton are just "no good"
That leaves the 3 teams that most thought at seasons start in the playoffs.

Yeah, they are not that far off. it's funny that I don't think this is even that brave a prediction, neither is the prediction that Flames finish last.
That's the kind of team we have this year LOL.

Slightly bold prediction as the way things stand now the flames will be in last at the end of the night. But I could see it, which is sad to say about the pacific division.

If their goaltending was .910 (pretty average) they would have a winning record.
I'll let someone else do that math and prove me right.

.890 might have got a few more wins early on.
Anyway, Arizona decided to crap the bed tonight against Carolina giving up the lead with 4 minutes left and loosing the game with 13 seconds left in regulation.
I'll stand by my "bold" prediction, anyone who wants to offer me odds...i'm all ears!

Math might be right, but we don't get to go back and play those games. Further, I am not so sure we will get .910 going forward.
I have hope, but sadly the Flames are at or near the bottom of the league.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

The Flames would have a negative 9 goal differential at that level of goaltending. Only the Pens at -1 have a negative goal differential and are above. 500 so average goaltending does not seem to be enough to get them above. 500.
Having one of the bottom 7 offenses in the league does not help. The Flames right now are a team that cannot keep the puck out of the net nor put it in the net. That is a bad combo.

Of interest.
My brother has been keeping track of game records on a per opponent basis.
For example first home game VS Bruins this year and first home game VS Bruins last year. This on the theory that our style game better fits against some teams than others.
Surprisingly we are very close to what we were last year. I think only 2 losses back.
A lot of the up coming games were wins last year.

I like the positivity, but the OP's prediction is based on all the other teams sucking as much -- if not more -- than we have/will. Considering we're officially last in the NHL right now (albeit with games in hand), that's a pretty tall order.
I'd be more optimistic if the Flames could string together 3-4 straight wins in regulation -- our current win streak makes for exciting hockey but we can't come back from every game from multiple goals down and/or in the final minute with the goalie pulled.
Also, people keep saying that the Pacific sucks -- part of that is because one of the better projected teams (i.e. us) is last in the league in several key categories. Once they start getting heavy into divisional games, SOMEBODY has to win...

With the Hurricanes and Oilers both collecting victories tonight, that means that the Calgary Flames are in sole possession of 30th place in the NHL.
Yet remain 6 points behind SJ for Home Ice.
Crazy.

Our next grouping of games is so important. We need to grab wins against teams that, maybe.., we have no business winning against. Gotta grab about 7 outta the next 10.

The pacific division may suck but it's starting to get pretty close between all the teams.

The Bruins game was wildly entertaining and pretty even. The Flames were by far the better team against Dallas in 2 of the 3 periods. Not sure how you can say they should have lost those.
