It made me think it was like real horse races, there are initial odds before any bets are placed and then and they fluctuate as the bets are laid.

Each bet reduces the odds it using the formula:
100 * nchips^-1.152
1 chip = 100
2 chips = 45
3 chips = 28.2
and so on...
The odds at the beginning of the round will just be a guide, you will see it next round.
You will get paid out according to the odds at the end of round 12.
so for example if Horse 9 wins and there are 30 chips on that square after round 12, everyone gets paid out "number of your chips * 1.98". Doesn't matter when you bet.
