If he gets voted in i'd be curious to see the ratings compared to former years.
I think the novelty may actually increase ratings

I could really care less. I don't even think it means much to the players these days.

Therein lies the rub.
MLB bounced over 60 million votes as "illegitimate" to avoid having all nine AL starters come from the same team. The NHL can do the same. Or, as in the Fitzpatrick case, can rig the count so that someone else "passes" Scott.
That being said, John Scott as all-star captain is probably the only way I spend any time watching this.

And what happens if they win again next draft lottery? Is there something worse than morbidly comical?
Probably a discussion for another thread, but...
The NHL failed with the draft system. They should've taken care of this problem way before McDavid (as if 3 #1 picks in a row wasn't bad enough) but didn't, they tip toed around with minor tweaks to the odds, and it resulted in yet another morbidly comical result, as you put it. They didn't have the guts to put firm rules in place to limit the number of first overall picks teams can have within a several year span. The system needed a complete revamp, and frankly if that left the Oilers out of the McDavid sweepstakes, so be it.
My point is, if the NHL is after credibility they certainly have a way of diminishing it themselves, so I have no problems with the fans making a further joke of things.

Can't believe it, but I agree with Dater.
If the NHL doesn't like it, change the system. Otherwise, deal with it.

Scott would be on the Pacific team, so these are impossible combinations; very good possibility that the (likely) lone Flames representative (either Johnny or Brodie, I'd guess?) gets saddled with this anchor. Can't get behind the vote for that reason alone.
My vote:
Jagr
Ovi
Kane
Gaudreau

Yeah, definitely don't want Johnny's All-Star stats to be hampered by playing with a bad player.
Just curious though, why wouldn't you vote for all Flames players? Obviously Jagr, Ovi & Kane will make it, so why vote for them?

If it means a bunch of redditors tune into the ASG to cheer on John Scott that otherwise wouldn't have tuned in, why not? Maybe they tune in for the joke, see that 'oh wow, this game is really fun'. Take this and turn it into a positive. Make money off of "Vote for Scott" shirts. Monetize it. MONEY MONEY MONEY!
Also, it sure beats the 'Bertuzzi Incident' as press for the NHL.

The only part of the Oilers winning McDavid is the fact that the biggest reason why the NHL failed here is that many teams voted against further changes to the rules (especially making the top three picks subject to the lottery until 2016) because they expected or felt there was a chance they would miss the playoffs and didn't wish to jeopardize their own chances at McDavid.
So, while everyone wanted to snuff the Oilers' chances, their own desire to maintain or increase their own may have played a big role in Edmonton getting him anyway.

If this creates fan interest, why not just run with it if you were the NHL? I think it's fun to see some plug or goon get voted in. I certainly followed fan voting a lot closer back when they tried to get Rory Fitzpatrick in. I'll definitely pay attention to this.

It also wouldn't have mattered anyway as the Oilers got the 1st pick with an 11.5% chance. That percentage chance hasn't changed.
It may have affected Buffalo, who picked second, however.

Scott will likely decline if voted to the all star game:
http://www.tsn.ca/talent/coyotes-sco...ation-1.403250
Quote:
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Scott told the Arizona Republic. “I just kind of stay out of it. Everyone gives me updates. The guys are giving me a hard time about it, but it’s kind of neat. The fans, they obviously like me for some reason. I think it’s more of a joke than anything, but I’ll take it.”
Despite the push from fans, the belief is Scott would politely decline an invitation from the league if he is ultimately selected. He’s known more for his fists - with 535 penalty minutes - than soft hands, which fans in Nashville will pay to see. Scott has five goals in his NHL career.
“I don’t want to have my name in the headlines for this reason,” Scott said. “Like, it’s a fun little thing and hopefully it’ll die down over time. It’s not something - I definitely don’t want to be voted into the All-Star Game. It would be cool, but I definitely don’t deserve it to this point.”
