Ha. Steinberg and Kerr now agree with my original line of thinking - sounds like Ortio didn't give his consent to go on the conditioning stint.

Horrible decision by Ortio.

Was this before, during or after Hiller went down with an injury?

My guess is that is why Ramo went. Better attitude, and by all accounts, wanted to play his way back up.

You can't fake 3 seasons in the NHL.
And if you could it would be an NHL outpost and not Boston.
Hamilton so far 200 games +19 24 goal 88 pts almost 20 minutes/game

Phanuef after 3 years 243 games +27 54 goals 159 pts just under 25 minutes a game.

Phanuef never was as good after his first 3 years.... after he started getting paid the 6.5M ... same age as Hamilton got his big contract.

I guess you might be able to "fake" 3 NHL seasons as a 19-21 year old.

There was nothing wrong with Gio's extension, it's magnified because he's having a terrible start this season but I wouldn't fault Brad for that.

Hamilton, really?

How extremely short-sighted have we become on this site because The Flames are playing poorly to start the season.

I guess it really is a "what have you done for me lately?" line of thinking here.

Brad has been fine, in fact great I would say and a lot better than Jay Feaster.

Setoguchi really was a nothing move, once it didn't pan out he sent him to the minors.

Bollig and Engelland could be argued as overpaid but they've had their moments for us (both playoffs and when Gio went down last year in Engelland's case).

Brodie's extension, are you kidding me? Amazing.

The goalie situation, I'll really call that one odd but at the same time Jiri made a good point of Brad thinking he was in on one of Jones and Talbot and it just didn't pan out.

I guess we can blame Brad on losing Byron though .

He kinda looked like him, getting burned on that goal by Rakell.

Sounded like both roster and player consent potentially contributed.

If the main factor was his refusal, wonder what Ortio was promised when he signed his two year deal with the second year one way?

What's the point in giving a player right of refusal if they aren't allowed to use it? He earned the right to stay with the big club when they gave him the one-way. Ortio made the right move and frankly it helps the Flames when Ortio exerts his rights. There was no quick fix, nor any point in simply delaying the inevitable another two weeks.

Ortio was wise to keep his career moving, instead of letting the Flames managements indecision hold him in limbo any longer.

“Getting sent down, it’s always a disappointment,” Ortio, standing in the lobby of the team hotel in Glendale, said Thursday morning. “Starting just two games … obviously, I would have liked to play more. But it’s just a unique situation we’ve had this year.”
Quote:
“But I don’t think we can (blame) the three-goalie situation every time,” said Ortio. “Yeah, obviously, it is different, but it’s no excuse. It’s not making our lives any harder. It’s just a little bit different. You’ve just got to adapt and deal with it.”

But some people don't want to see that because they want to be angry and bitter.

Friday-Saturday is certainly the ideal time to go with the backup for a game, but unfortunately for Ortio, Hiller is ready to come back.
The best way to spot a losing argument. Find someone posting a snapshot of the season and ignoring everything that went on around it.

The fact that Ramo played well in an 8 game sample doesn't change the fact that goaltending was dreadful but Hartley still chose to sit Ortio despite many opportunities to ply him.

Oh great. Another thread derailed into a Dougie Hamilton bashing thread. It's getting old and quite frankly it's ridiculous and painful to read.

I'm not sold on Treliving at all. I like the Hamilton deal but I don't think he's done much that is remarkable overall and I think he screwed the start to this season.

You think 3 goalies screwed the start of the season? I keep hearing this sentiment, but all that means is the goalies are mentally fragile already. It's not like the Flames kept 3 goalies going for months, they had 3 goaltenders for a whole two weeks.

Exactly this. If they couldn't handle being put in a position of having to battle for their job and all three failed, then all three are not exactly endearing themselves to management for the long term. You want to have someone take the reigns and show the coaching staff that this is my net, and I don't care who else is here. None of them did that, and they all performed quite terribly when given a shot. At this rate, I would not be overly disappointed if at this point next season that all three players are no longer in the organization, with Ortio being the only one giving me pause.

That doesn't mean things can't change, but it does change the equation of what needs to be done with the goalie situation moving forward. I would not be shocked at all if the Flames make a play for a legitimate #1 goalie between now and the start of the season next year, either through trade or through free agency.
