Does he have to clear waivers to come back up? I'm not really clear on waiver rules.
I skimmed the thread looking for that answer, didn't see it

Not necessarily. If a team had claimed him he would have had to be on their regular roster or risk losing him on waivers. If a team trades for him now he can be in the AHL too.

No. Re-entry waivers were removed in the last CBA.

Not true at all. A lot of times a guy will clear waivers then get traded a few weeks later because some teams are up against the contract limit and need a 1-for-1

No. He's an RFA. If the Flames qualify him, he's back.

No more recall waivers, so no.

No. If they qualify him, they retain his North America rights until he is 27.
He is still free to sign in Europe this summer.

His contract runs up this summer and now 30 GMs told him they don't need him for nothing. If this will not kick him in the rear enough to turn his game around, he is done with NHL

Yeah it's hard to celebrate that one of our top rated prospects dropped so badly that no one would take him for free.

Just because CP collectively voted him as the #5 doesn't mean he actually is or ever was. For the record, I personally didn't even have him in the top 10. I don't think Ortio has star potential but stranger things have happened. His status with me was elevated due to our terrible goalie situation. If we had a bonafide #1 goalie in his prime I wouldn't care about waiving Ortio or letting him rust for months.
When you've got no money, it's probably not advisable to throw away a lottery ticket you haven't scratched yet.

Goalies are different, each team only (usually) carries 2 of them.

Or maybe we should acknowledge that as a fan base - we arent that great as ranking the prospects.
Based on this season Mason McDonald should rank above Ortio. But based on what we knew during the summer, there was a good case to rank Ortio where we did.

Actually wish the waiver rules on goalies was a little looser. They take so long to develop it'd be nice to have more options for a longer period of time with them.
|
I don't think it's a problem. Recent history doesn't lie and the Flames have shown they have not been able to slowly break in NHL goaltenders from their farm system to the NHL. Lots of other teams have no issues using the backup position for a goaltender they have developed through their system but the Flame have been reluctant to give them fair opportunity to acclimate themselves to the NHL game.
Hartley is in the business to win games not develop players but developing young players contributes to winning long term. It's a catch 22 but hopefully in a few months when the playoffs are no longer in the picture Hartley can do what's best long term for the organization.

Ortio is the last man standing from the Flames '09 draft. The fact a 6th round pick has even got a sniff of an NHL career is pretty good. I still think he makes it in the NHL on a consistent basis.

Fair enough. If he signs outside North America instead, good riddance.

The waiver rules on goalies are looser.
Goalies are waiver exempt for one year longer than skaters, and the cost to put in a waiver claim on goalies is higher than the cost to claim a skater. A goalie with 5 years experience costs $63,750 to claim from waivers, a similar skater is only $26,250.
