To be fair, in 2013-14 he wasn't very good - only an .891%.

In his little run last year, he was lights out in his first two, not great in his third (but still gets a W), good in the fourth, but brutal in the fifth (and also in the last game of the season).

People remember his first two games too much and place too much stock in those couple games, partly because the Flames were desperate for wins then and he supplied them. But look at his last 4 starts (last two last season and the only two this season).

i can't believe that no one has mentioned it yet, but this all screams of trade.

team x wants ortio in a deal, but if they claim him off waivers then he has to stay with their big club. if he clears waivers he can then be traded and the team that gets him has more maneuverability.

Despite this logic, I'm still hanging on to my hypothesis.

I've been a supporter of Hartley and the results he has been able to achieve to this point, but IMHO his strong side is focused on team culture, work ethic and intangibles. His game decisions (line-ups, scratches, PP/PK schemes) this year have been so questionable, it's hard not to think of him as a one trick pony.

Your average Flames fan can sit down for 5 minutes and put together a completely reasonable list of 15 things Hartley has done this year that make no sense at all not only in theory, but in terms of the results he's achieved from those decisions.

It kind of is like he got hit on the head at a charity softball game and lost it.

Yeah, I agree and would add that the coaching staff knows him way better than we do and he does not have their confidence.

Clears waivers, can be traded to other team's AHL team right?

Ortio hasn't played in almost a month, and has only played 2 games and 2 periods leads me to believe he'll clear. It would be risky taking a goal tender that hasn't played in that long. Where ever and when ever he plays he's going to be rusty. His timing and positioning in game situations is going to take time to get back after being out that long.

I think the best place for Ortio once again will be in the AHL, at least until Hartley trusts him enough to play him. And put him in a position to succeed. I'm not sure Hartley put him in the best situation by playing him against two tough play-off bound teams especially considering Ortio hadn't played in a meaningful game since late March/early April.

Some of you guys are reading into the PTO too much.

As previous stated Nagle was signed primarily because Stockton does not have a backup goalie to dress.

Eric Hartzell was signed on a PTO on Nov 23 and released on Nov 24 because they found a better goalie in Nagle. - Point being PTOs in the AHL don't mean anything really.

I think he clears, but if he doesn't what a waste. To make the investment in his development over the past number of years and lose him while still under control. And for what, Hiller and Ramo?

If we lose Ortio, Gilles and MacDonald best fast track their development because we will be left with a gaping hole of ready goaltender prospects. And, we will be back to the "best goaltender not playing in the NHL" and whose back-up might be our starter conversations.

The Flames apparently don't think Ortio is a ready goaltender either so it really has little effect.

I think they've been rolling the dice all season. They made the mistake of keeping all 3 in the NHL and now they're going all in on Ramo and Hiller without really knowing whether Ortio is ready.

Montoya will not be out long term. He's dealing with a sore neck and will participate in practice going forward. He was not concussed.

I don't think you have to worry about the Panthers claiming Ortio.

Just FYI, the 3rd stringer in Portland is Mike McKenna and is the most experienced goaltender, but not a great one. They also have Sam Brittain, but he's pretty young still and would not likely be called up.

This screams to me that Gillies is injured long term.

BT likely has a pretty good idea that Ortio will clear and can then get playing time in Stockton.

FWIW, I too have been told that Ortio has not practiced well at all since the season began by someone who would know.

Yeah I've read or heard that Ortio hasn't been practising well also but the thing with goalies is that it may not mean much. They're a different species.

FFS. They are not going "all in". They need to get Ortio a lot of playing time, and Stockton is the place to do it. At the start of the year, they felt his being claimed was a serious threat. At this point, they don't. It is still a risk, but is viewed as a reasonable one. That's all there is to it.

Maple Leafs look like they may need a goalie with Reimer out for who knows how long, unless they call up Sparks who's been stellar for them thus far and plus Bernier has not been great so far this season.

My off the wall prediction is that the Oilers claim him to be their backup

Talbot is their backup right now.

Can't see them sending him or Nilsson down to claim a goalie that is worse.
