@DarrenWHaynes: Stockton announces signing of goalie Pat Nagle, 28, to a PTO. Forget Hockey Wives, there should be a drama/comedy called Flames Goaltenders.

Ortio on Waivers
Okay I need to keep track of this. Is this right?
NHL:
- Ramo
- Hiller
AHL:
- Gillies (injured)
- Ortio (if clears)
- Poulin (injured)
- Simpson
- Nagle (PTO)

Well if the only difference is that Ramo has a good attitude and Ortio doesn't then I can see why. So many variables behind the scenes we don't know. I don't get why we automatically jump to the defence of Ortio and assume Hartley is the bad guy. Maybe Ortio half asses practice and is a smart ass. I don't get how no one is giving Hartley the benefit of the doubt when he's actually done something for this club at the NHL level unlike Ortio.

This. There's some strategy going on behind the scenes here guys. Waive him when the most likely claim is to replace a #2 injury, and he'll then be waived again once #2 returns and we can then claim him back and place him down in Stockton for the rest of the year.

I think the amount of time we've invested in him, and more importantly, his performance last season, warranted more than two starts this year.
|
No mystery at all. Ramo came in and played extremely well at a point in time where we had almost no back to backs, and a lot of spare time overall. Hartley went with the hot hand. Then Hiller was healthy enough to return and it makes more sense to send Ortio down to get a lot of playing time in Stockton.
He will be back.

I am pretty sure a player in Ortio's situation has to completely clear waivers before he can be demoted. i.e.: if Dallas claims him, then waives him, then we claim him back, we still have to waive him again to get him to Stockton.

What are people complaining about? The reason why Hartley is playing Ramo is because he wants some consistency in the net, which I think most people here can agree on. Not only that, but Ramo has some what been playing well for the course of the last several games. He absolutely warranted all the starts over Ortio. I don't think the Flames are in a position right now to "try" out Ortio, he played terrible in those games he started and the fact they need to obtain points.
And people need to realize he's better to play in the AHL, then a bench warmer in the NHL. Yes, there's obvious risk that he might get claimed off waivers, but I'm pretty sure Treliving would throw away an asset without talking to other GM's in the league.

I voted he clears. I still don't think he was given enough of a look. Unless there was something going on in practice where he was showing to be a significant drop from Ramo/Hiller, there were multiple times to get him in a game.
He didn't impress in his first couple starts, but neither did the other two. And I understand given a guy the reigns to get a groove going, but there were chances to play Ortio without affected Ramo IMO.

I think he gets taken... we've seen the potential that he has had many times.
This year is a circus. I have a lot of faith in Treliving, but this whole 3 goaltender thing was a circus, and Hartley giving Hiller/Ramo many tries despite them being terrible while letting Ortio sit in limbo (aka the press box) was the wrong decision IMO.
Not a fan of this at all. I can definately see Ortio going off to another team and having a Kiprusoff-like career.

If Ortio does get claimed there's a chance next summer the most experienced goalie in the organization is Kevin Poulin.

I think he gets claimed. And, I wonder if this signing is Treliving thinking there's a reasonable chance he gets claimed as well

There will be lots of options, we'll probably end up signing Cam Ward. Though I can see it happening where we fall out of the sweepstakes and just end up with Hiller/Ramo again. Haha. (ok not haha)

Stockton doesn't have a backup goalie for tonight. That is the main reason for the signing.

What about Jimmy Howard? He's fallen out of grace in Detroit, maybe swap Wideman + Pick for Howard?

If Treliving thought it was reasonable that Ortio gets claimed, Ortio probably wouldn't be on waivers. He knows it is a risk (as it was with Paul Byron), but I think Treliving believes Ortio clears. Otherwise, he would probably have gone the conditioning stint route first.

You have to imagine they test the waters to see if a team wants to claim. I get that team's could lie, but I imagine GM's don't like burning bridges over waivor claims. Usually why you see a guy who was going to be waived traded for a conditional pick, etc.
Again, why would another team want a goalie the team with the worst GA deems to be the worst of their 3 goalies, and who has never proven anything at an NHL level.
We vastly overate Ortio. Most teams have their own Ortio's in the minors right now
