Because the 31 year old is a better player right now and would push them closer to being contenders now.
The Islanders aren't like a Canadian team - they can't just sit around and wait to be better.
Also, Tavares is in his prime.

They think the 30 year old guy is a better player?
They think the 30 year old guy can help them win a Cup?
They think the 30 year can offer leadership lacking on a young team?
They think the 30 year old is just recovering from his surgery and his play is going to return to the Norris level that it was in the lock out year and last season prior to the injury?

They (and or the agent, who are the usual leaky sources that insiders like Dreger use and get used by) now just want to get this over and done with as soon as possible/before Christmas, so let it out for public consumption. As said, pressuring a team that they are close in trading with, or opening it up to a bunch of trades for a potential 3 way deal.
This is now going to cause a distraction to the team and the player, so I think this is a calculated risk by the Isles and/or the agent to push this issue to conclusion rather then being stuck in limbo.

It has been reported that it is the Isles who are sticking to their high price and looking for the right deal. Remember the Isles are doing this as a kindness to Hamonic, they are under no obligation to trade him, he doesn't even have a NTC.
FWIW, Arthur Staple beat writer for the Isles says the leak didn't come from the team or Hamonic's camp.
edit:
Snow also has a reputation for being tight lipped about his dealings. He routinely surprises the insiders with trades and signings.

i think Russell + a good prospect (Porier/Kylington/Hickey/Granlund/Jankowsk/Klimchuck) is a decent offer. Perhaps the Flames include Ortio? Isles don't have much in terms of young goalies and the Flames need to solve their 3 headed goalie situation.

Why? It is possible a team other than the Isles leaked the information.

Some kind of conditional draft pick in case Russell walks would have to be included I think, unless it was a sign and trade situation where the Flames signed Russell to the extension before the trade.
All of that still probably doesn't land him, but it would be the furthest I would be willing to go. If the conversation starts with Brodie or Hamilton, that's also where the conversation ends IMO.

Oh, they (we) are real fans; they (we) just tend to be mostly clueless about evaluating talent and generally are too emotionally invested, and have axes to grind.

I can't see how the Isles could risk being left with nothing at the end of the deal and take the big downgrade right now.
Hamonic is a very good young defenseman.
While they may be slightly higher than Hamonic is there any way we are taking any of these offers for Hamilton or Brodie:
Tom Gilbert and Jacob De La Rosa/Mike Mccarron- Montreal
Braydon Colburn and Brayden Point- TB
Kyle Quincey and Ryan Sproul- Detroit
I just can't see any deal around a mediocre UFA being at all appealing for a 25 year old defenseman playing top minutes for a play-off team.

Hmmm I suppose so. But if I were Snow I wouldn't tell the other GMs that Hamonic asked for a trade. I would try to frame it a little differently but I guess maybe they would just read between the lines?

Yes I would imagine it wouldn't be too hard to read between the lines if Snow was insistent that he get a comparable defenceman back like Friedman's report says.

As for Hamilton, his mistakes were covered by a good defense corps. He comes to a team in a rebuild and he is exposed. This isn't a bad thing but right now he is playing bottom pairing minutes for our team thats got just 3 more points and 2 games in hand than the Oilers.
Obviously giving up a young defenseman with solid promise is never going to go over well. I said I'd rather have Klefbom.

The 'only Western Canada' angle makes me suspicious though. No way Snow divulges that info and I doubt another GM would know that unless they were told. Presumably he would be shopped to other teams to drive up the price, even if Snow had the intention of sending him to Western Canada.
If I was a betting man, I'd wager that Hamonic's camp leaked this to speed things along.
