Varlamov wouldn't solve all of our problems but to say he wouldn't be an immediate upgrade on our situation is strange.
If Hiller and Russell gets it done, that's easy.
I don't understand when people say "that isn't enough, they would ask for _____". Of course they will ask for Gio, or Brodie, or any great player. Rarely is that what they'll get, so it doesn't really matter what the asking price is. Whoever is in charge in COL has not shown themselves to be frugal trade partners.

I don't see colorado having interest in wideman, as their problem is defense and not adding offense. I agree that a money for money deal would centre around ramo-hiller and Russell. Possibly a smaller piece or two to even things out.
Picard would ideally be making first goaltending starts in the ahl for one more season, so an expiring contract would work for colorado.
Not outside the realm of possibility, especially if Hartley isn't sold on ortio.

We should trade Hunter Smith for Reto Berra.

No way, Hunter Smith will be very useful when goons make a comeback in the NHL.

I wouldn't trade smith for Berra, but goons aren't coming back. Smith isn't a goon he's just a big player with skill who will be a solid player for us.

I don't think Wideman gets it done I think it is Hiller+Russell or something like that
|
I don't really car if he gets paid starter money as he's never won any hardware and his overall body of work is spotty. I would ask for a 2nd round pick and send Widemen only back to even consider taking on that deal because he's somewhat of a risk you have to live with for a lot of money and term. Any team taking that contract off the Avs hands is essentially doing them a favour and the Avs won't get much in assets for him outside of a salary dump like Wideman for example.
Edit: Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports as on the 960 radio a few minutes ago. Said he doubts any team would trade for Varlamov as nagging groin injuries are major issues for goaltenders. Says the return would be very low for him, less than you would expect.

I love the fact our GM is known to be a guy that is always gushing the marketplace.
I am not concerned about knee jerk bad trades like we saw in 2010. I hope he is still able to pull something off in terms of goaltending but as time goes on I feel that the team is preparing to enter the sellers market which is not the end of the world but the official end of this year

With what is going on with Bernier in Toronto would he interest any fellow Flames fans?
Wondering what it would cost? If there is a chance we could get him for Hiller straight up or Hiller with a prospect like Worherspoon or Granlund?
Hiller and Bernier make the same but Bernier has a year left on his deal and appears to be in a bad spot in Toronto. Do the Flames risk it to get a goalie that has shown flashes? Does it just hurt them cap wise more by committing to a player with a contract beyond this year?

Maybe a little off topic, but I just have to add that I watched the Colorado Montreal game the other night and Berra looked like a completely different goalie than when he was with the Flames.
He still looked massive, but he was in tight control of his movements and really made very save look easy. Not flopping around or over playing the shooter at all like he used to here.
I wonder if the Avs goalie coach helped him adjust his game or maybe Roy's influence? Either way good for him. I was skeptical after seeing his stats, but he definitely passed the eye test from me last game.

My roommate in Lethbridge is a huge Avs fan, so I've watched a lot of them, and some nights he makes me regret trading him, and others I laugh that we got a second. Seems to be coming around but can be inconsistent.

Leafs are playing the Avs tomorrow. Reimer has been awesome in goal for the last 5 games and the Leafs have played well too. On the other side, Berra has also been on fire in the other goal.
Interested to see how this one will turn out.

Is Reimer up for a strong season, or is it just a hot streak?

I'd like to say he is up for a good year rest of the year or even that this is his coming out party or new level, but I'm weary about that and history suggests his play will come back to earth.
I think it's really a hot streak, but I hope I'm wrong. He is reasonably young so there's time for him to improve though.

I've thought the same. Were things going well with Malarchuk? (Remember him being good but maybe I'm wrong). Sigalet just seems questionable.

Ramo & Hiller both had good years under Sigalet last year. Rtio had a good year under him the season before in Abbotsford. I highly doubt he's the problem.

I would say it's just a hot streak, the guy loses the net more then Ramo from what I've seen. The Leafs are playing at a level in their own end right now that is miles ahead of the Flames this year. As hard as that is to believe.

Yeah. That's rather obvious. The Leaf players are actually engaging the opposing players in their own zone, boxing guys out and pushing guys off the puck, unlike many of the Flames players (especially the defencemen) who mostly just skate around but don't really close the gap that well and use a weak stick check or just stand around and hope to block a shot or intercept a pass.
