My point exactly. I think there are better options out there for the Flames. That's a big contract with 3 years left and Varlamov hasn't been that great. I'd prefer getting someone like Bernier or Reimer or one of the Tampa goalies or anyone else. Speaking of Tampa goalies, I'd rather have Bishop instead if he was available.

Varlamov is not the answer, and having him on the books for the next 3 years while giving a conference rival a 1-year terminating contract is a bad move.

The Flames should work on building a system that their players can effectively execute. Or, if the Flames trade for a goalie, trade for a consistent one who would be an automatic upgrade day 1.

Colorado won't want Wideman, he'd be on their 3rd pairing. Russell would make more sense from their POV as an expiring contract and a LH shot, but that probably won't be enough.

Russell+Wotherspoon+Raymond for Varlamov?

Varlamov might not be the long term answer but we need someone to bridge the gap until Gilles/McDonald are ready. Ortio is the only G under contract next year and I sure as hell don't want Ramo or Hiller back. Varlamov is likely better than anything we will find in UFA and if you trade for him, you secure his services. If you put all your hopes on UFA, you'll likely get burned. Classic buy low scenario and the Flames should be all over it.

EDIT: Ortio not under contract but is under team control

Some of the offers are ridiculous this guy is a proven NHL starter with a vezina nom in recent memory. They'd probably ask for Giordano

Scheduled UFA's this coming July I wouldn't mind at least exploring: Reimer, Ward, Stalock, Andersen, Raanta, Mrazek, Gudlevskis and probably a few others. I'm sure at least one decent goalie will be made available through trade too.

There's no rush in getting a goalie now anyway, might as well wait for it to be a better market to buy.

We need a goalie for next year, sure. But I really don't want to be taking on contracts we need to deal with next year.

That being said, I can't think of an answer to our goalie situation next year. I really hope Ramo and Hiller are left to walk... but no clue who sits in our net. I understand rebuilding and patience... but I don't want to have to put up with another year like this one.

When have you ever witnessed a goalie get a top line Dman or forward in return in a trade?

I would say Bernier and Reimer on are a much lower level so if you are fine with going that route and then pinning your hopes on Gillies and/or MacDonald developing then I guess you go that route. But I don't see either of those guys likely to be a quality contributor to our team if/when we are at contender level. And if Gillies/MacDonald don't develop as hoped you are in the same goalie situation you are now plugging someone in and holding your nose hoping they are going to play better than they have shown.

Varlamov at least offers an option for the next 5-8 years if he plays like he has the past two years. If the young guys develop, then awesome you can let Varlamov go but if not then you aren't back to square one.

As for the TB guys I don't see any indication that they would move either guy and the Latvian doesn't seem to be anything more than the guys we have now.

The FA list this upcoming offseason looks like a whole lot of maybe's in terms of guys that haven't been starters or have been bad/mediocre starters. None of them look like very appealing options at all.

Varlamov would only offer an option for 3 years as he could just leave when his contract is done or even demand a trade ahead of time so 5-8 years is a stretch. There's really no indication that Varlamov is even that good as he's being replaced by Berra. I'm sure he's an improvement to what we have now but what's the point in making that trade now? I hate to be that guy but it seems that this season is a wash so giving up an asset to get Varlamov now would be a mistake. I think keeping Wideman and hoping he plays well enough to trade for a better player than Varlamov is a better option but if this were the summer, I'd be more inclined to make the deal.

There's no real rush to pick up a goalie now.

Who's going to play goal for us next season? When do you start rushing to pick up a goalie? In the off season? Who knows what the market will look like at that time.

Bernier and Reimer are both on the same level as what we have now. Suckiness.

I doubt Wideman is going to get you a better player than a top 15 goalie in the NHL and a legitimate starter. His contract and complete lack of speed or a defensive game aren't going to attract many suitors.

I guess he could demand a trade but guys rarely do that and more often than not re-sign with their teams as FA's, especially if the team wants to keep them.

He's been replaced by Berra for 8 games. I hope we use a longer sample size than that to evaluate players or their replacements.

You don't rush now IMO, either at the end of the year or draft time. At the end of the year if a team with a goalie they aren't playing is contending and wants to make cap space to add a player for the playoffs and is willing to trade the goalie, you do it. I also think that you let this team figure things out right now, either start to play well and succeed or fall flat and realize what the mistakes are and move on but also get a higher pick. Another reason I just don't like the idea of bringing in a goalie now is that you're essentially pinning all your hopes for the season on one guy and that's a lot of pressure. If the move is made at the end of the season or the off season, it's essentially a fresh start for them.

Rarely see an established starter goalie traded period so it's hard to gauge their value. You usually see up and comers move. Last legit starter for player one I can think of is Luongo for Bertuzzi 06.

That said, plenty of back ups and nice looking prospect goalies have been getting very good returns like Jones, Talbot and Lehner

Berra is better than Carey Price so far this season.

...being "replaced" by the hottest goalie in the league is hardly a slight. I'd think the Avs trading Varlamov would be incredibly short sighted as there's no history to draw upon that shows Berra can maintain his incredible start to the year.

I'm a big proponent of being patient. Suck it up just like we are, draft in the top 5, then go after a goalie in the off-season. I'm fine with that - but Varlamov is still definitely a viable option. He's only 28, he's been very good over the last few years, and is a legit #1 goalie in the NHL - which is exactly what we need.

You make that deal now, or during this season, if you're not keen on how the goalie market is shaping up for the offseason. Both in terms of what FA goalies may be available, or in what goalies under contract may be available via trade.

I'm not saying that Varlamov is better by a wide margin than the other pending FA goalies you named. But if that's Treliving's assessment, he explores that trade.

Varlomov is paid like a franchise goalie getting 65+ starter money. I expect a similar return Luongo got when he was traded back to Florida.

I don't think Wideman gets it done I think it is Hiller+Russell or something like that

If they take Hiller and Russell for him we should make that trade immediately.

But with Berra and Pickard I am not sure why they have interest in adding Hiller.

I honestly didn't realize he was only 27. It's really hard to gauge him though...the more I think about it, the more I wouldn't mind him on the team but I just don't think now is the greatest time for it.

If they did Wideman for him 1 for 1, I would jump at that I just can't see the avs doing that.

Strictly a cap dump for the Flames. Insurance for the Avs and an expiring deal
