I've got a question. The pope is supposed to be the guy closest to God right? How does 5 guys in dresses figure this ###### is closest to God? Or is it a popularity contest.

I believe in God and no I don't believe in organized religion, and this is a prime example why.

Which traditional definition would that be? You must mean the Judeo-Christian one, which in itself is exclusionary.

Marriage throughout history has taken many different forms, and 1 man/1 woman is just one of various different ones.

If you want to argue about babies being produce, what about a polygamous marriage?

The Catholic Church needs to get out of the Dark Ages and clean up their own kitchen before they criticize others.

I can't take the Pope seriously when he wears a hat that my grandmother would wear. I could really care less about the same sex marriage mind you I am the farthest thing from religious. I think it's great that Canada goes on opinion polls, it's a democracy isn't it?

With peoples definition of marriage and what not.

There are many different cultures around world. Different beliefs, lifestyles and religions. A christian's defeinition of marriage is going to be different then a native tribe of Africa's definition of marriage.

There is soo many ways to view and interepert things. No religion is right and no religion is wrong. That's way a dumb old world man who is head of a church that not everyone believes in should not go around telling people what to do or think.

Sometimes it seems that the Pope only says things like this to get in the news. The popularity of the church is going straight down hill, so it seems that they try to get there name out there. Remember all publicity is good publicity.

It might also be a result of the change in Policy. Benedict is a lot more conservative than JPII was, and he's trying to show that, I suppose, to illustrate the new directions the Vatican will be taking. Unfortunately, all it does is make him seem out of touch, IMO. Gay marriage is controversial among a few ultra-conservatives, but it's hardly du jour.

I agree IFF, the thing I don't get is that these guys are all popes under the same religion.......why would the policy change? Shouldn't they all believe in the same ideals, regardless of what year it is? To me, they are all conservative..........in a bad way.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I would say there is little to no difference between policies of current pope and JPII. Can you think of any dogma where their opinions significantly differ?

I think there is a subtle difference between religion of a small tribe and a religion that bases morals on the Ten Commandments. Regardless whether you think that Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God or Moses pulled them from thin air, ethics and morals based on them withstood all turmoil in history and made it possible for the Western civilization to become the most thriving civilization. The proof is in the pudding – how many people migrate to the West (EU, Northern America, Australia and NZ) from the rest of the world and how many people migrate the other way? People vote with their feet and they clearly indicate in what world they want to live in.

New fancy moral standards were being dreamed up during the centuries in order to substitute “obsolete” catholic morals. Since the French revolution, there always were attempts to ditch catholic morals and bring the new, “modern” morals to life. All these experiments failed miserably. If the pope thinks that liberal Canadian laws are just other weak fancy moral standards indented to appeal to wide masses, disrupt the fabric of western society and doomed to fail long term, he might have a point. So I think the pope is pretty right to say that catholic morals are superior to pretty much any other moral standards that have been applied to practice during the history.

BTW I am saying this as a non catholic, a non Christian and even as a non conservative.

The pope can kiss my @ss. That lazy sumbitch extended his vacation until october and because of that, my reservation to see the observatory in Castel Gandolfo (the pope's summer residence) has been rescheduled for next friggin april. I made the reservation back in february.

Maybe the popes view of the world is being obscured by those chocolate covered donuts he has around his eyes.

Dick.

I knew I dipped into the rum and cokes pretty heavy last night, but I really didn't remember posting that until I was reading through this thread this morning. Weird.

I think (?) what I meant to say was that some people refer to some popes as more conservative (Benedict), others more liberal (JP II).......if they all believe in the same ideals, why would they be labeled as such? Wouldn't/shouldn't they just all be.....the same?

I think he is more conservative in the way he speaks out against other nations.

They probably have the same ideals, and morals, so in theory they are probably both 'conservative, but its their actions that make them more hard line then their predecessors.
