Which of those things does Iggy do well? I love Iggy, but at this stage in his career he's a 3rd line player + PP. He can still get points but he's a liability overall.
|
So far this year the "new era" seems to be about top line scoring and nobody else being able to.
Iginla brings a secondary scoring option to the team that they don't have.
And if the above list is an indication of what the Flames are looking for then at least half, if not more of the players, need to go.

Hell, if we're getting Iggy I'd like to see us go full frothing Flame fanatic and stick him with Gaudreau and Bennett.
Hey, that line actually doesn't sound so bad in theory.

Really? It would be a slam dunk upgrade for a position we need.
Or are you worried about how he'd change the locker room dynamic?
Or is it a "been there, done that" type of thing?
How about Iginla for a 7th? Would you do that?

Sure does. Although I wouldn't be against reuniting the top line and putting iginla with Bennett. I think Bennett is going to be an offensive machine for this team similar to how gaudreau is. Be nice to spread that kind of skill across two lines.

You can debate whether or not you think Skinner is small. But I don't think there is any debate that he plays a pretty soft game.
The Flames are too small and too soft on the wings. With Bouma and Ferland out, it is blatantly obvious.
And not only are the Flames small on wing, but the bigger guys are typically the older ones. Jones and Bollig might be our two biggest wingers.
The only guy that Skinner replaces in the lineup is Hudler. And I would rather have Hudler - who I have no doubt we could re-sign for less than $6m.
I don't see how Skinner solves any of our problems. AND his concussion history is a huge risk. AND at $6m, we don't have room for him under the cap.
So tired of going through this over and over. Skinner is a bad idea.

Iginla? Really? And were gonna trade decent assets to do it? Let's remember what year of the rebuild this is. Last year might have been a one off. Whether it was or wasn't lets stay the course and do this right. If were trading players or prospects lets think long term not just this season. Were gonna be in tough to make the playoffs and trading assets just to accomplish that makes no sense to me. Missing the playoffs isn't the end of the world.

Iginla makes 5.5 million dollars, and while he puts up points, he doesn't do anything to address the defensive deficiencies of the roster, in fact he probably exacerbates them.
What need does trading for Iginla solve for this team? Secondary scoring to help the team this year?
Who gets displaced in the lineup for him to come in? Raymond is spending most of his time in the press box, so is that where Iginla goes, or does Colborne no longer have a roster spot with the team? What happens when Bouma and Ferland get back, do the Flames risk waiving another player?
Does paying Iginla 5.5 for this season and next help or hurt the ability the team to re-sign Monahan and Gaudreau? Does having a 5.5 million dollar Iginla in the next two years help or hurt Calgary's chances of taking on salary via trade or competing in free agency for specific players?
Basically, if your concern is building a cup contender around Gaudrea/Monahan/Brodie/Hamilton, how does bringing in Iginla help that at all? How does it help if you have to actually spend assets to get him?
No, Calgary should not be moving out any picks this year, even 7th rounders to bring in over the hill veterans that may or may not provide secondary scoring which may or may not vault Calgary into a playoff position.
So no, not even for a 7th round pick would I bring Iginla back.

The more Skinner dislike I hear in this forum, the more I want to see Skinner on the team. I used to only see Carolina as a way to unload contracts like Raymond or backlund for misused Carolina players or expiring contacts, but now I'm on board.
This is mostly because skinner + granlund is a wash for Raymond and backlunds salary, and I'd rather see the first pair. If Russell is needed to see the deal go through, I actually like nakladal better.
I'll trade guys that are redundant here for a shot at a high end scorer in a bad situation every day of the week. He's soft? Oh well. Pair him with colborne and ferland.
Skinner at the right price (guys who are redundant ina year or two) is a steal.

Scoring Winger
|
I've always liked Granlund in the capacity of 3rd liner. He has the offensive potential to score 20 in this league if used in the right situations. Problem is they've never given him enough of an opportunity to stick. The contract situation didn't help after training camp either, even though he was one of the better players. I fear that he's going to throw in the towel at some point after not being given a proper chance, then get dealt and become a regular fixture on another team's roster.

This Skinner talk is for the birds.
Seen a lot of Rangers games being from Kitchener.
I once thought he was going to be a star with his scoring abilities.
Unfortunately he's gotten his bell rung too many times and he's not even a shadow of his former self now sorry folks. I wouldn't be surprised if he retired soon to be honest.

Flames won't get Iggy.
They will let this group try to right itself. Even the goalies.
Failing that they will trade vets at the deadline for picks and prospect and try again next year. I doubt they will acquire anyone over the age of 26 unless they are on an expiring deal and come with goodies.
Its not tanking because this group went to the 2nd round of the playoffs last year. Thats what mgmt will say.
At least this is how i interpret things.

Iginla has a NMC. Last I heard he didn't want to be in Calgary and I don't think anything has changed.

I agree with not salvaging the future for acquiring iginla. That's why the iginla for wideman swap is the kind of trade I would propose. Avalanche could use an offensive defenseman and the flames could use a scoring winger. It's the perfect example of a hockey trade.

I don't think anyone actually thinks its a possibility.
Just a lot of speculation of how it would go down and if it would have been a good idea if it were possible.

No thank you on Iginla, he's slow and too many plays die on his stick, couple that with how bad he is defensively, I wouldn't give up an asset that hurts us from re-signing our good young players.
No thank you on Skinner, while he is young and talented and we could use him, his health is in question and it has been reported that he is thinking of retiring because of it.

Backlund + a defenseman should be able to net us a legit top 6 winger. The more I think about it the more I think he's expendable and is a good trade chip. Colborne, Stajan, Jooris, Bouma, Granlund can all step in at 3rd line C. Arnold, Jankowski coming up.
I like Backlund but trade him for a greater team need please.
