Star Wars may not have the biggest opening ever, but as long as it's not ####, it will be the biggest movie ever.

The trailer is 155 seconds long, with about 15 seconds of advertising at the end. So, a 140 second trailer. Good job, facebook.

I don't, their tv side of things is in trouble. No one has profited off the cable carriage fee cash cow like ESPN has, and their 10 billion/year carriage fees are starting to erode, and could accelerate quite rapidly if cord cutting reaches critical mass.

Why do you think it wouldn't have the biggest opening ever? The number of screens and showings and sellouts this far in advance suggest it will likely smash that record easily.
Beating Avatar for biggest movie ever would be a pretty big challenge though.

I've never seen Avatar and don't plan on it, I also know many who haven't as well. I am hard pressed to find anyone who isn't going to see the new Star Wars although I am sure there will be some. I think this will beat Avatar, hype machine is huge in comparison with all the established Star Wars history...Avatar just kind of came out of the "blue"

Because it's opening on the Christmas holiday season and movies released then just don't have as big of openings as the summer blockbusters.
We'll see I guess.

I wonder how they count the ticket sales for the big marathon showing? If that all goes onto Episode VII's box office total, it will give a big boost to the total.

You're right but both Avatar and Titanic were released on the Christmas holidays and we all know how they turned out. Also SWTFA will become the biggest box office take of all time I will be very surprised if it doesn't.

Xmas holidays generally mean that whole families are available to see the movie at any time of day. That will be big for filling the midday screenings of the movie. At least from the 17th to the 5th or so. Summer releases are a bit different in that regard, although the there are exception depending on family schedules.

The one thing Star Wars will have is repeat viewings.
You know if this thing is actually a very good movie that the big fans will go see it 2 or 3 times.
If they can capture enough of the casual audience, the repeat viewings of the hardcore fans will be what puts them over the top.
And I think they will have that casual audience because unlike 1, 2, & 3 which were more about the core fan base, Star Wars has done a good job of making their brand something that kids think is cool again. Between the Star Wars Lego (collectibles and video games), Clone Wars TV show, Disney Infinity, and the new Rebels tv show they are really making it something that is popular with kids again.
When I was a kid (especially around Episode 1) Star Wars wasn't something that was prevalent outside of the movies, now Star Wars is everywhere. They have done a good job a creating a new generation of fans in the last 10 years in advance of the new trilogy.
It really is crazy that Disney was able to buy it for only $4 billion. If they can do this right the revenue stream opportunities are endless.

The potential box office performance of The Force Awakens is possibly the least interesting thing about the movie.

True. I would like to go back and discuss Kylo Ren's lightsabre. How are those vents not more dangerous for himself than his enemies? It conjures up the "cape" scenario from "The Incredibles".

Avatar Release Date: December 18, 2009
Star Wars Release Date: December 18, 2015
Seems pretty comparable if you ask me.

I like the theory that he has no formal force training, so his lightsaber is a crude design that needs those vents so it doesn't explode. They're not about protection at all

I could listen to the sound of his lightsabre in the trailer all day long.

I wonder if he somehow managed to obtain Vader's crystal for that, assuming he is a collector of Vader / Sith items.

Well its pretty logical to assume that they're vents and the light sabre does sound kind of ragged.
When Palpatine fell down a well and Vader croaked, the only real trained force user out there was Luke, and if he decided not to train Jedi, then there was nobody around to train people on making things like a Saber.
If he found Vader's mask, it shouldn't have been hard to find Vader weapon and attempt to copy it or use components from it.
I do think its weird to have a broad sword weapon as a Lightsaber, as Kenobi described them as an elegant blade from an elegant time. A broadsword is not designed to be elegant, its designed to be swung hard repeatedly or jammed into the victims gut. Its one of the least elegant weapons out there.
Edit, it could also be that those vents are more for intimidation then anything else.

Yeah, I understand that they are vents, just seems illogical to have them on the side where they could potential cause the user harm, and not say directly opposite the blade and out the back.
I am just not sure if I agree with the "he doesn't know anything" argument". Luke made a much better one with not much additional knowledge. Not sure if Yoda or Ben ghost-imparted any lightsaber-making knowledge, but I think he was in the same boat and don't think he took the time to examine his original lightsaber in detail before Vader cut him hand off.
