I live in Toronto for the last 5 years, in downtown and now in the suburbs.
At least for me, I have mainly heard good things from the people I live and work with about Alberta (although it's a different story about Harper). Many people here knows at least someone that moved to Alberta for a better opportunity, and/or someone that has lost their job in the current down turn. I'm not getting the East vs West thing you seem to think is persuasive here.

I think that's awesome. Not because I necessarily like skateboarding, but because it shows some youthful enthusiasm and an "I don't give a ____ what you think" sort of vibe to what is likely mostly grumpy old farts pointing and laughing . I wish the conservatives had attacked that, would have been hilarious to see that backfire too.

Cons: "Look how young, he rides a skateboard! Just not ready!"

Apathetic 20-25 year old males: "Hey did you see that Trudeau boards to work? That's pretty awesome. Maybe we should vote!"

Cons: "Oh, people...like that?"

I'm sure Trudeau had his security detail on-hand too.

Yeah, I didn't even notice them until you mentioned it.

Obviously he has some security (looks like two or three guys). But they're keeping their distance and don't even really look much like security. They're not walking right in from/behind him and vetting anyone that approaches. Pretty stark contrast from a lot of world leaders, although it is his first day.

I just spent two weeks in Toronto and I go back 2-3 times per year. I have yet to come across someone who thought poorly of Alberta, especially since it seems everyone has at least one family member who moved to our province for better opportunity. This Alberta "hate" is just conjured up by partisan media and political spin doctors who wish to create sides. The funny thing is, I would wager to guess that most people who have that "East vs. West" attitude have never actually been to the other side.

Torontonians, IMO, have better things to worry about than hating on Alberta. I have never seen it displayed by anyone there.

I wouldn't say anyone out East legitimately hates Alberta, but there is a thought that we're "Canada's Texas", and not just because of oil. Which I find hilarious, because the most Redneck people I know are from Ontario.

Rural Ontario or Northern BC.

I spent a few days in Smithers BC this summer...that stereotype of Canadian Lumberjacks or whatever must have originated there.

I'd put money on this being a more BC thought than an Eastern thought.

Not going to lie, the most disturbing thing the election results brought into my mind wasn't that we had elected the son of Satan, it wasn't that those nasty Liberals were back in power, or that we are looking at deficit spending...

The most disturbing thought for me was I am officially older than our Prime Minister.

Does anyone know what voter turnout was in this election (by percent of eligible voters)? I am really curious.

There was some talk that running a negative campaign increases voter apathy and decreases turnout. It was mentioned a while back that lower turnouts tend to favour the Conservatives.

Trudeau more or less, tried to run a positive campaign ("Canada Can Always Do Better"). Not that there wasn't also the "sick of Harper" angle, but it wasn't the driving force IMO.

Preliminary numbers say 68%.

Quote:
According to preliminary figures from Elections Canada, more than 68 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot, or about 17,546,697 registered electors. That's a big jump from the last federal election, when just more than 61 per cent of Canadians voted.

The figures, which do not include Canadians who registered on election day, show that Prince Edward Island had the highest voter turnout at 77.4 per cent, with Yukon (76 per cent) and New Brunswick (74.6 per cent) close behind. In Newfoundland and Labrador, only 61.5 per cent cast ballots, with Nunavut (62 per cent) and Northwest Territories (64.4 per cent) also drawing fewer voters to the polls.

I used to spend a lot of time out in Smithers and found there are also a lot of new agey hippy types. Now Prince George and Fort St. John... Kapuskasing in Ontario is also an interesting place. The only time I actually witnessed a person try to wrestle a wild black bear.

The people who befriended my wife and I in Quebec just wanted to show us a good time and explain their own culture. The ones we met in Montreal joked that they knew were from out of province because no anglo Quebecers would have gone into the local francophone bar we were in. We enjoyed remarkable hospitality everywhere we went, including wholly francophone Rimouski. If people mentioned politics at all, it was only to explain their own community's history and attitudes. Very few people anywhere are interested in trashing other people just because of where they're from.

Ayup. A couple of my good buddies are from Tumbler Ridge and we don't call them mountain-billies for nothing.

Not saying that theres anything wrong with it, but they were literally living stereotypes.

Everyone only worked part time because they all had Woodlots. They'd work part of the year, they'd work their woodlot part of the year and then they'd take EI for the rest and then start all over again.

I would have to agree. My anecdotal evidence is from spending a good amount of time/living in AB, BC, and Sask and really only a 5 day stint in MTL (although I know a lot of people from the east, just haven't been there much myself).

I hear much more "pot-smoking, granola hippie BCers", "Sasky farmers", "Blood-sucking easterners" etc.. rhetoric from AB people than I hear people from other places take much in the way of shots at AB people.

That's a fair statement. We just choose to forget Abbotsford while doing it.

Obviously this poll is lacking women, but just shows it will be a wide open CPC leadership race (lol Oliver)

No, no, no, no nope! We are absolutely not doing this again. Do you know how long it took for those annoying "Thanks, Obama", and "Thanks NDP" posts to go away?

This meme is the worst. The absolute worst.
