It will probably take a whole generation before the effectiveness can be judged fairly.
I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but Trudeau mentioned that one of the reasons for his stance, is that his brother was facing possession charges in BC shortly before he died. Michel Trudeau was into snowboarding, skiing, and some extreme sports, before his untimely demise in 1998 from an avalanche.
This was at the same time that snowboarder Ross Rebagliati was nearly stripped of his Gold Medal for testing positive for marijuana use. IMO, marijuana is far less harmful on society than alcohol.
They would be taught the dangers of doing drugs and the consequences that their actions will have on their future if they continue down that path.
Consequences of smoking a plant that makes you happy, more introspective and more sensitive? Maybe even, dare I say, more creative? Yikes, don't go down that path.

I have no doubt it will be. The problem for the CRA and the police will determing who is doing it for personal use and not to sell on the black market.
Why would they have to worry about that?
The effect of legalization *should* lead to lower prices. In that case, why would somebody go through the trouble to grow marijuana to sell at a loss? Anybody going through the trouble of growing it would likely be doing it for their own enjoyment, like home brewing, not selling.

Then of course, we have a boat load of legal drugs that ARE in fact dangerous - highly addictive and harmful. But hey that's OK, they are chemically produced in factories and owned/controlled by big pharma.

I am for legalization, but this is a terrible argument to make.
Prescription drugs are prescribed by a professional. If one wants to point to the issue of doctors over-prescribing, I totally agree it should be looked at, but it has no bearing on this discussion (we don't make one bad decision for society because we're bad elsewhere).
As for non-prescription drugs - there not meant for recreational use. Yes people over do them, and even use them as recreational, but they serve a strong alternate purpose. As this discussion is not about medical weed, I would propose this has no bearing either in this discussion.
We can all think big pharma is scummy, but I truly don't think we can point to them if we want to be taken seriously while discussing legalizing weed.
The Harper way (and the republican way in the US)... if someone is doing something you don't approve of, beat them into submission and ruin their life!
Say the Liberals form government tomorrow, either with a Majority or a Minority. How soon do their platform policies (specifically speaking in regards to tax policies) go in to place? Right away? After the Spring budget?
Just wondering so I know if the Income Splitting (which I fully admit that I benefit from) will still be in place for the 2015 tax season or not.
I do benefit from the Conservatives forming government again but deep down inside I don't want that to happen. I will kiss Income Splitting goodbye (after only benefiting from it one year), wi would be cool though if I can use that just one more time

They have to pass each of their platform policies into law before they go into effect. If they don't win a majority, then they need the support of at least one other party (most likely the NDP) to get anything done, and there's no guarantee the NDP will let them implement their platform wholesale without any modifications.
With respect to income splitting specifically, I imagine they'll probably leave it in place for this tax year and then repeal it with the budget bill for next year.

I don't think my point is terrible. I recognize that we live in a modern world were medicines and drugs are required. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy of vilifying cannabis when we have common pain killers, cough medicines, things like gravol etc. that are much more potentially harmful that cannabis, but perfectly acceptable in society.

Cool that makes sense (ride out the fiscal year as is). So yay that means using the 'Family Tax Cut' for at least one more fiscal year. Who knows maybe by the 2016 or even 2017 tax season that won't be quite as beneficial to me anyway.
I figured that in a Liberal Minority that the Libs would be able to push their tax policies through anyway (both the NDP and Libs are consistent in removing Income Splitting). Not sure about other policies though.
If you look at what the provincial ndp did they made their tax increases retroactive to this year so right now on payroll deductions they are taxing at 4 times the increase in marginal rate to catch up.
The libs could do it with a lot less pain as its a payout rather then collection so you don't actually lose the money you just never got it. If they plan on passing a budget before year end then I suspect they would grab that money right away to pay for other spending.
Especially if is a minority where that money would directly reduce the deficit they plan to run which is politically good if their is an election in the next two years.
I watched it. He made fun of all three of them. Then took aim at the Canadian law about non residents trying to influence voters, which is where the 5000 dollar fine and/or 6 months in jail (or Ottawa lol) comes from.
