I love all these new conservative ads – it's not about me it's about you. Pretty rich from a leader that made personally attacking the other leaders a staple of his campaign
Article is from a few weeks ago, but speaks to what we've been talking about in the past regarding what could happen if the Conservatives only claim a minority.
If the Conservatives win a minority government on Oct. 19 and the opposition parties decide to defeat the government on the Throne Speech, Governor General David Johnston would not agree to call another election immediately and would instead invite other parties to form government if they can, experts say.
Mr. Johnston “would not call an election because the Throne Speech is so early in the session that somebody else has the right to try to prove they enjoy the confidence of the House,” said Prof. Ned Franks, a professor emeritus of political science at Queen’s University, in an interview with The Hill Times.
Prof. Franks said that regardless of the election outcome, Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Calgary Heritage, Alta.) would have the first right to form government. But if he fails to win the confidence of the House, Mr. Johnston, a former professor of securities regulation, information technology and corporate law would invite the other parties to seek the confidence of the House before agreeing to call another election.
Quote:
NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair (Outremont, Que.) told reporters last week that there “isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell” that his caucus would prop up a Conservative-led minority government.
“I think that anybody who has attended a single Question Period over the course of the last several years would be able to tell you that there is no likelihood that the NDP would ever, under any circumstance, be able to support Mr. Harper,” Mr. Mulcair told reporters last week.
Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.) echoed that view.
“There are no circumstances in which I would support Stephen Harper to continue being prime minister of this country,” Mr.Trudeau told reporters in Montreal last week.
The New Democrats have expressed interest in forming a coalition government with the Liberals but the Liberals have rebuffed the offer. But Mr. Trudeau has not ruled out the possibility of working with the NDP without forming an official coalition in case no party emerges as a clear winner on Oct. 19.
“One of the nice things about elections is that it is Canadians who get to decide who sits in their Parliament, and the Liberal Party has always been open in minority situations to working with other members of the House to pass legislation that serves Canadians,” said Mr. Trudeau in Montreal last week.
I live in a condo in the Beltline. When I came home from work on Friday evening, there was a flyer with Kent Hehr's name and Liberal branding hanging from the front door to my building advising residents that early voting was occurring this weekend. Mid-morning on Saturday, we had a volunteer from Hehr's campaign knock on our fifth floor unit (another resident must have let them in the building, which is probably against our condo bylaws, but I'm not going to complain about it) asking if we'd voted yet and if we needed help getting to the polling location. Later Saturday evening, another person identifying themselves as a Liberal volunteer buzzed our unit and reminded us to vote.
I don't know if Hehr's volunteers are canvassing every home in Calgary Centre like this or if they're specifically targeting addresses of known supporters (my wife and I both donated to his campaign), but I've never seen a GOTV effort like this from any election campaign before. If Kent loses, it certainly won't be because of lack of effort on his and his team's part.
I voted liberal in advanced polls today and my
Father in law is ready to disown me. Really upset and not looking forward to tomorrow with the family, but Harper has to go.

You have to let them in the building no matter what your bylaws say. People are also allowed to put election signs in their windows.
No one from any party has come to my building yet.

Wow. This was the ad that played during the game tonight. I don't watch TV aside from sports, so maybe they have played this for a while, but it is a fantastic political ad.

IIRC, our condo corporation has a bylaw prohibiting residents from allowing solicitors (which I assume applies to partisan election volunteers for a specific party/candidate, but I could be wrong) into the building. Do you have a source to the law indicating that we have to let them in?
Re: signs: I actually didn't know about that, but I looked it up, and it's right there in the Canada Elections Act:
Quote:
322. (1) No landlord or person acting on their behalf may prohibit a tenant from displaying election advertising posters on the premises to which the lease relates and no condominium corporation or any of its agents may prohibit the owner of a condominium unit from displaying election advertising posters on the premises of his or her unit.
Marginal note:Permitted restrictions
(2) Despite subsection (1), a landlord, person, condominium corporation or agent referred to in that subsection may set reasonable conditions relating to the size or type of election advertising posters that may be displayed on the premises and may prohibit the display of election advertising posters in common areas of the building in which the premises are found.

They premiered it starting tonight (I'm on the Liberal Party email list and got an email about it a few minutes before it aired during the game). The new campaign slogan, "Ready." is an absolute masterstroke of advertising. Whoever thought to co-opt the Conservative line of "He's just not ready" and turn it around is a marketing genius. No matter what political party you support, I hope everyone can appreciate what a great ad this is from an advertising perspective.
Also, I'm 100% sure the Harper attack machine is already preparing an ad in which they play Trudeau saying, "It's time to raise taxes on the wealthiest 1% so we can cut them for the middle class" but take it out of context so it's just a clip of him saying, "It's time to raise taxes..."
Just saw a Harper ad saying the other parties want to make this election about him, and, not the issues.
Is this guy for real? HELLO? "He's just not ready" attack ads. "Career politician" attack ads. Does anyone who will vote this clown actually stop and LISTEN to this drivel? Unreal.

You are wrong. It is ILLEGAL to not allow campaign workers into apartment buildings. They have every right to canvass in your building; you must allow them in.

as someone who has canvassed in this election, the party i volunteered for indeed provided me with a copy of this legislation and a signed authorization form from the campaign

Say what? Are the Conservatives attacking another candidate for being a "career politician"? What do they think Harper is? Aside from a very brief stint working in the mail room at Imperial Oil after he dropped out of university, he's never held a job in the private sector in his life. He's spent practically his entire working career as either an elected MP, a Reform Party policy wonk, or an executive at the National Citizens Coalition, a conservative lobby group. You'd be hard pressed to find a single candidate in this election who is more of a "career politician" than Stephen Harper.

That ad is really great. Reminds me of Obama's 2008 ads in US.
Put that beside any Conservative ad and the difference is night and day.
