Treliving is known to work the phones constantly. This could have been like the Phaneuf trade where no one knew he was available.

Fans from every team worry that their fringe guys won't make it through waivers.
There are Oilers fans thinking that Davidson and Nilsson aren't safe to expose to waivers.
Almost every player exposed to waivers clears though.
The pool of fringe NHLer's is much larger than the pool of actual NHLers.
NHL teams are never in a rebuild because they are lacking in fringe NHLers.

Were I the Leafs, JVR is a guy I'd keep. He's young enough to be part of the solution

Usually yes, but waivers was why Shore was traded already by Florida. I think SHore is a little less of a fringe guy than many of the players on waivers. Due to his age, size, skill level... etc. I fully expect him to be claimed. Someone like Byron on the other hand I think would clear.

Toronto seems to be interested on picking up vets on the last year of their deal so they can be traded for picks at the trade deadline. David Jones as part of a package?

If anything the Flames need another young, top six winger. The Leafs have one of those - JVR. Highly doubtful they're going to move him for a package including Jones unless it involves significant draft picks, or Brodie/Hamilton. Not going to happen

I would rather the Flames trade jones at the deadline for picks than trade him now

Yeah, but Florida essentially traded Shore for nothing.
They got back Knight, and sent him to the AHL, and have already cut him this preseason so it's not like he was in their future plans.
That makes me think no other team would even offer a late pick for him.

So that makes Gretzky only as good as Martin Gelinas?

They got a guy who had played a few decent NHL games, who they could use and send up and down (unlike Shore). That's an asset.
Shore is in the identical situation to Colborne when the Flames got him. The only difference is the amount of upside - Colborne being higher. So the return would not be big right now, but if another team figures he would make their roster, either as a 4th liner or a black ace, it's worth maybe a 5 or 6.

Knight was originally a Florida prospect. They chose to get back knight because they didn't need to aggressively scout his game - they knew what they were getting.

I think Oil Stain is basically right on this one. Shore's value is no higher than when he was traded for Knight so if we can trade him for anything, that is probably the likely return. An older, waiver eligible prospect.
If BT could get a draft pick, that would be fantastic.
I suspect he clears waivers and starts the season in Stockton.

Strange Brew is right. Shore hasn't done anything since the trade to increase his value IMO.

Every team has prospects like Shore who are borderline and waiver eligible. Most of them are able to pass through waivers this time of year.

Yeah, Florida's problem at the time was that Shore would become waiver-eligible in mid-season if he played any more games. It's a lot harder to sneak players through waivers at that time of year, when they are going through one at a time and other teams have injuries.
At this time of year, he probably clears.

It's terrible. He has two years left with a $4mil cap hit with a modified no trade clause. Yuck.

I'm sure they have been for a while and likely no one wanted him. I'm sure they would have traded him before Saad and Sharp if they could have.

if it has a modified NTC, how could they trade him to the oilers? I thought the purpose of an NTC was so you can't be dealt to the oilers
