Lives In Fear Of Labelling

They said on Global that it was as a result of an assault from another inmate.

Can't say I'm upset to hear that. Former prison guard friend of mine said that was pretty much guaranteed to happen

I'd love to know more about what happens in prisons in Canada. I'd be willing to be it's nothing like the prison life you see on TV shows from the USA. Most prisoners who are likely to be attacked because of their crimes are probably not even with other prisoners. I don't know. Maybe there are some good books on the subject that I should look into.

Former defence lawyer here. If people find out that you've committed a sexual offence against anyone, or possibly some other type of offence against a child, you're going to get beat. Word travels pretty quick in the system Even if in protective custody, you'll still get your ass whooped on occasions like transportation to court.
It's not as bad as the U.S (I believe), but there is still raping, beating and threatening. People are always on the lookout for fresh fish (newcomers unfamiliar with the system)

It should be criminal if they do. I hate that they do this and that it's accepted and applauded by society.
I get this situation and other egregious crimes, but it's the same mentality as capital punishment if it's allowed to happen by officers representing the government.

Nope and nope.
They don't show much compassion for when it happens, but they respond, quite professionally.

And further to that, numerous criminal charges for assault/assault causing/aggravated assault/etc. are laid for prisoner on prisoner incidents (at least within the city). Despite the bloodlust from the public, there's obviously a fair bit of liability to Corrections having prisoners duke it out all the time.

Do we have a lot of prison guards in this thread? Or are people giving their opinion? A lot of absolutes in regard to prison guards as if they're all the same.

My sister is a prison guard and I hear stories all the time. I am pretty sure that most take their job duties seriously and would prevent any attacks when they can.
I have a friend in BC that is a guard as well and he told me once that they catch prison rapes all the time. They don't let them happen, but he made it sound like there isn't much they can do given staffing.
