Comparing contracts can be misleading. He is great value compared to Wideman or Phaneuf, horrible value compared to Keith.

I think he's a borderline #1 and that's being generous. He's certainly a 1st pairing guy, but he's more a true #2 to me. A true #1 brings offence along with him. EJ has never broken 40 pts, but in fairness he's scored double digits in goals a couple times so he's a pretty good shooter. However he's never played a full NHL season. I honestly think he's been living off his reputation as being a 1st overall pick. It also seems like he's been around forever, but he's still young at 27 so maybe he puts it all together. Maybe not. Sure he can log tons of minutes. But so can Bouwmeester and no ones calling him a #1.
Him being better then Brodie is debatable, but I'd take Brodie over him without thinking twice. Overall I think it's a good deal. 6mil these days for a
team's #1 guy is pretty good. But as long as EJ it's the Avs #1 guy, they won't be going very far IMO.
